I shift and adapt therapeutic approaches, including ACT, DBT, EFT,
mindfulness
, laughter, and real talk.
I was on a walk with my 15-year-old going-strong, slightly cataracted rescue dog, Burty, and I was thinking about what I appreciate about my own therapist. I think of her as someone who genuinely cares about me and holds all my "stuff" in a safe container. I fully trust her, so I am entirely myself around her, which helps her help me. I aim to offer you the same; a meaningful and trustworthy therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to connect to your authentic self and talk about the stuff that feels heavy in your heart and busy in your brain. My goal is to help you feel safe to show up to your own pain, and to find meaning.

I integrate a variety of Cognitive, Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based, Existential, and
Mindfulness
-based techniques to help clients take steps to change their current situations.
I strive to meet my clients where they are at, and to help them achieve the changes they seek. I believe that under the right circumstances, clients have the capacity to look inward, to free themselves from feeling stuck in the past, and to find new ways to move forward. This often requires hard work, but growth and change are possible when clients are given a safe space to explore unhelpful patterns of thinking and learn to think in healthier ways. By clarifying their personal meaning, clients can be empowered to choose new directions in life.

Life can be tricky. There can be challenge and triumph or disappointment and regret. These ups and downs can lead to a collection of past hurts which cause you to feel misunderstood, overwhelmed, hopeless or just plain tired of dealing with others, or even with yourself. It’s ok to not be ok. You deserve relief in your life to move from just surviving toward thriving in your life.

Sometimes, the stress we experience in our lives becomes too much to handle alone, and it is too much to rely on friends or family for support. Sometimes, it is our friends and family that are causing some of the stress. At other times, we recognize our own need for change. Change can be daunting, and a trained professional can offer insight and empathy to help successfully navigate our landscape. Life transitions, loss, gender and sexuality, can all result in times of intense pressure, as can 'happy' events, like moving in with a partner, or switching careers.

Are you stressed? Anxious? Are you often caught up in your painful past or worried about the uncertain future? You are reactive and take everything personally. You are irritated and restless. Disconnected and misunderstood. Empty and joyless. Self-criticism is your mantra. Happiness a virtual reality. It's hard to remember what matters to you or who you are. You are stuck. In. Your. Misery. I help people get unstuck. I help people improve their health and well-being, and overcome obstacles that are getting in the way of life. I provide practical tools to help you be present, open up, and do what matters.

Does your anxiery, depression, weight concern, or emotions paralyze you? Much of the current research, including my own, shows that it's often in the on-going attempts to rid ourselves of "symptoms" that actually intensifies the problem. Often times it is these "avoidance" strategies that are largely responsible for keeping us trapped in an ongoing cycle of increased psychological suffering. Our anxiety, worry, unease and fears result in our living too much in the past or future. Through
mindfulness
and values-based living, we can work together to help you live a more authentic and present life.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
