For couples, I draw from the Gottman Method (I’m trained in Levels 1 and 2).
Sometimes it can be easy to believe there is something wrong with us. Why can’t we fit in? Why can’t we be happy? Why can’t we get along? If you struggle with anxiety, depression, people pleasing, perfectionism, burnout or any other concern that can lead us to feeling “not enough,” I’d love to support you on your journey. My work is founded on the basic principle that you or your relationship do not need to be “fixed.” I trust that you, you wonderful human, are worthy just as you are, and perhaps you can benefit from authentic support and making incremental shifts along the way.

I have received training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Developmental Couples Therapy, and attachment-related therapies.
I work mostly with couples who are striving to improve the way they relate to and connect with each other. I have a lot of tools and experience to help couples improve their communication, stop unproductive cycles of fighting, feel more emotionally connected, and build trust in each other. My clients have included couples in the early stages of their relationship who are preparing for marriage, those who have been stuck for many years in some negative habits, and those who are seeking help to recover from an affair.

I also provide couples counseling, and am currently working to complete certification with Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
I see strength as an innate characteristic in all people. I also understand that it can be difficult to see that strength within ourselves in times of hardship and pain. It can be incredibly challenging to explore the most vulnerable parts of our being; our innermost thoughts and feelings. I believe that this work can begin in a non-judgemental, safe and supportive environment that empowers individuals to make the positive changes needed to live happy and fulfilled lives. I believe the key to successful therapy is developing strong therapeutic relationships with my clients rooted in empathy, trust, mutual respect, and understanding.

I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gottman Method for Couples Therapy (Level II), Relational Life Therapy Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and Transactional Analysis (TA).
The human experience is both wearisome and wondrous. My role is to provide compassion, therapeutic knowledge, keenly observe strengths, and barriers to help you navigate the wearisome so that you can fully enjoy the wondrous. Working with clients, helping them to develop self-compassion, acquire flexibility in their approach to life, and learn robust coping skills is a deeply satisfying part of my work. I’ve observed that couples are wanting more from their relationships, yet we aren’t taught skills which allow us to relate well. I guide couples as they acquire tools which foster better communication and relationship skills.

I use cognitive behavior therapy, and trauma therapy including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Emotion Focused Therapy, and Gottman Method (couples therapy) interwoven in practice.
There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analysed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomised controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
