I specialize in treating a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, behavioural concerns, substance use, and relational issues and
family
dynamics, using CBT, DBT, ABA, and EMDR. The type of therapy, or combination of types, that best supports your goals is chosen collaboratively, and can look different depending on what you want to achieve. I work with some populations that may require a more specialized approach, including individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, first responders or public safety personnel, and individuals with acquired brain injuries.

I believe that people seek out therapy when they have used all of their personal resources to confront a challenge. Sometimes that challenge is internal, such as depression or anxiety; sometimes it is external, such as life transitions or financial strain; sometimes it is interpersonal, such as couple or
family
problems. Each person has a different skill set that they have used in their life and therapy is useful when they want to add to that toolbox. It can also help to build reserves before a stressor occurs, such as when couples are deciding to move into together, or before an employee enters a stressful period at work.

My hope is that through a safe therapeutic relationship and collaborative goals, you or your
family
will have stronger, healthier, more connected, and more fulfilling relationships.
Seeking support takes a great deal of bravery, and with bravery comes reward. People seek therapy for many reasons: relationship challenges, wanting increased self-awareness, learning how to be kinder to themselves, feeling disconnected, or struggling to manage emotions such as anger, grief, loss, shame, anxiety, and sadness. If you are reading this, you may be curious if therapy would be helpful for you. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or just not yourself. Therapy can help when struggling with these and other mental health challenges that may be significantly impacting your relationships with yourselves and others

I approach the
family
as a whole, working with parents and children to improve the life of the whole
family
.
My background is in systems theory; the idea that everyone is connected to those around them, with influence between all those people, organizations, and cultures. My approach to therapy is primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but I also see a need for insight into the meaning that we make/have made of things and how that impacts our present. Therapy then, involves opening space for a person to increase awareness of their own process and to see alternative perspectives, thereby empowered to make different life decisions. It is so exciting to see someone realize that they have the power to change their perspective and their life!

There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent,
family
and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

This may be a problem within ourselves, our relationships or a situation which is seemingly beyond our control. Let me support you in tapping into your natural strengths and resiliency to overcome the problem that is facing you today. We can work together to find the solution that will work the best for you.

Family Therapy Counsellors
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
