Parenting Teens is hard! Parents often feel disconnected from their adolescent and uncertain how to move forward in continuing to support their teen as they grow and develop. I help parents explore how they were parented and to determine which traditions for their family they want to keep and new ideas they want to incorporate in parenting their children. We can chat about ideas about how to guide their children in peer relationships, social media/technology, emotional regulation, and risky behaviour (e.g. suicidal ideation, self-harm, substance use, running away).

Recognizing that parental support is paramount, I utilize family -centered care and attachment theory to support families and children in feeling understood.
By strengthening relationship and fostering connection through talk and play, I take a balanced approach of addressing the needs of the parent and the child. You may be a parent/caregiver seeking to build a stronger connection with your child, deepen your understanding of presenting concerns, or strengthen family cohesiveness. You may be wanting a comfortable space for you or your child to learn strategies and build skills, or you may be simply wondering why your child acts and feels the way that they do. Sessions include meeting with parents and children separately and together.

There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

Despite the value of compassion it is viewed by some as "weakness" or even "not trying hard enough." My goal is to help you and your family discover how compassion can enable you to strengthen your emotional intelligence, personal well-being, and relationships. My compassion-focused approach aims to teach you how to be open to and tolerate painful feelings and develop self-understanding and inner wisdom to know how to deal with life's challenges. This is particularly helpful to adults who have personal struggles linked to shame and self-criticism and those who have experienced childhood trauma or tragedy later in life.

In my practice I focus on couples & relationship issues, family of origin issues, depression and anxiety.
Things are often not what they appear and our past experiences might have negative effects on our self-esteem and self-image, how we perceive things, and how we relate to the others. Those past experiences often prevent us from moving forward in life and keep us stuck. I have been passionately providing counselling to individuals, couples, children and families and supporting them in their journey to reaching full potential. I help clients who are facing depression and anxiety as a result of life challenges, such as relationship issues, divorce and separation, past traumas, parenting issues, health concerns etc.

Working from a relational stance, we join together to widen the perspective using lenses like Family Systems Theory, Attachment Theory, and AEDP, among others.
Life can be messy on the inside, even when it looks great from the outside. Often we can feel numb or overwhelmed inside. Alone. Are you seeking to gain insight and clarity around your habits, patterns or relationships? Do you feel your relationships are supporting you or keeping you stuck? How does your life feel to you: vital and juicy or stale and stagnant? How do you want your life to feel? And who were you meant to become? Perhaps you are navigating a significant life transition - exploring who you are and what's next. Often, counting ourselves in is the first step.

Are you a parent? Does your child/youth struggle with anxiety, managing big feelings, managing their busy bodies? Do you feel like they are closing off? Do you feel like there is a meltdown every other day? Have the effects of COVID-19 taken a toll on your family ? You may find yourself wondering how best to support your kid when half the time you don’t even know what’s going on. You are not alone. Many parents feel at a loss with their kids from time to time. And I don’t blame you! There’s no instruction manual to parenting. Counselling provides a safe space for kids to explore, express, and understand.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
