My approach is evidence-based and largely informed by attachment, emotionally focused , and cognitive-behavioral treatment modalities.
I am a Clinical Psychologist with a family-focused practice and over 15 years of experience. Children, youth, families, and parents/caregivers often see me when there are concerns about behavior, sleep, anxiety, emotion regulation, family and peer relationships, adjustment (e.g., parental separation, medical diagnosis), and disrupted attachment (e.g., foster care, adoption). Adults seek my services when they have concerns and goals related to relationships, coping, and adjustment. I have worked in diverse settings including children’s hospitals, school districts, a not-for-profit organization, and my private practice.

CBT, EFT ) the artist/creative in me also enjoys bringing in art, mindfulness, imagery/metaphor, and sandtray to the experience.
I aim to meet my clients apart from the pretension and stigmas of the psychology world, as well as the norms of culture/society in general. Creating a space apart from all the things we think we need to be and should be allows for an authenticity to engage the obstacles in life in a new way. Therapy should not be “one size fits all” and so with the expertise that you have of your life, combined with my skills and training, we can work together to get past both the internal and external things keeping you from being more of the human you were meant to be; creating a new mental space where you can continue to grow and thrive.

I work with my clients using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Gottman Couples Therapy modalities.
By taking an attachment-based and developmental lens to therapy, I believe that people have good reason for their current unhelpful responses/patterns in life. Often, these responses/patterns were developed in childhood and were functional once upon a time. However, many times people find that behaving in old ways are not serving them in new situations and with new people. Through compassion and empathy, I work with clients to cultivate awareness of the patterns that are no longer serving them, help elicit adaptive change in the areas they are struggling with, and assist them in accepting the things that they cannot control.

My latest learning of Emotionally Focused Therapy is the amazing way to help individuals and couples.
Over 30 years, I have the privilege of talking to, listening to, walking with and praying for women & couples who struggle with their family, marital, and interpersonal relationships. In 2002, I graduated with a MA in counselling. Since then I have been counselling formally in the Calgary area. I love to help women to reconnect with God in their spiritual struggles and work on their relationships with others. I have journeyed with many women who experience domestic abuse. The vicious cycle has kept many in terrifying living situations. I also enjoy working with couples who love each other but have a hard time getting along.

I adhere to empirically validated therapies - Emotionally Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy and Gordon Neufeld's attachment based, developmental approach.
My passion in helping disconnected couples and families find their way back to each other. My work assists couples who seek that connection and experience of being seen, heard and deeply understood by their partner. I pay particular attention to those interactions where couples get stuck, and guide them to create more trust and safety in those moments where the "signals get scrambled'. My family therapy focus is informed by an attachment based, developmental approach. This is a parent coaching model that empowers parents/caregivers by grounding them in the science of attachment while providing "in the moment" strategies.

Using a dynamic approach, I will focus on thought with CBT, emotions with EFT , and somatic issues, cumulating and combining into IFS work, to dislodge burdens of pain.
I work from a strength base perspective, specializing in individuals who have had early childhood trauma, with those who have C-PTSD, episodes of dissociation through to multiple personalities, personality disorders, ADHD or Autism, as well as with Couple and Family relationship issues. I seek to identify breakages in thought that produce skewed emotions undermining unity of being. Trauma dislodges us from ourselves. The disturbance / horror clients witnessed, needs to be answered and mended through revealing, liberating, and engaging their immense inner strength with competent care - which brings about release, freedom and healing.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
