I have more than 30 years experience working with families going through separation and divorce.
Are you looking for a helping hand through divorce, or other trauma, or are you struggling with feelings of uncertainty, general unhappiness, depression, or lower than ideal self-esteem? Together, we can look at strengths, look at what is not going the way you would like it to go, and strategize a plan for making things better. If you have experienced trauma - whether from a car accident, an assault, or abuse as a child, then I definitely have skills in helping to reduce ongoing negative effects of these experiences, primarily using a technique called EMDR, as well as other strategies.

When parents say "good-bye" to each other in divorce mediation, the conflict has been well-managed only if children have been helped.
My practice, over the years, has become more and more attuned to problems of conflict and issues of violence. As a trained child psychologist, I have seen first hand the raw damage an emotional injury continues to create. As a clinician, it has not been unusual for me to see the same sorts of trauma: yet locked away in one's memory, living on in current behaviour. This is what conflict can do. The issues just seem to keep on repeating themselves, inevitably with the same unfortunate outcomes. (My role sometimes is the Life Coach who becomes a personal guide.)

I am trained in EMDR and have over 6 years of experience and training in the psycho-legal arena as it pertains to divorce and separation.
I have experience with a variety of client challenges including anxiety, addiction, complex trauma, OCD, ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, complex family dynamics and relationship challenges. I have a strong interest in Interpersonal Neurobiology (the brain’s ability to rewire itself when offered corrective emotional experiences) and Sensorimotor Therapy, which rests under the assumption that trauma or attachment disruption is stored in the body. In addition, I have a special interest in assisting families navigating divorce and separation both in and out of the Court system

Parenting can be both deeply rewarding and profoundly challenging. You’re doing your best, but your child struggles. You want to help them thrive but aren’t sure how. Maybe your family is facing big transitions (ex. divorce, grief and loss, school change), sibling conflicts, communication breakdowns or mental health challenges. Your goal is a peaceful, connected home with you and your children, where everyone feels understood and supported—a family that grows stronger together.

I work with people experiencing empty nest, divorce, menopause, mid-life transitions, brain fog, loss, and trauma.
I am accepting new clients! Your body is changing, your relationships are shifting, and maybe you’ve experienced more loss of late. Everything is different and you feel overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated. You are not alone. And while I know that doesn't make it go away, I want you to know there is hope.

Along with helping clients with issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance use and other mental health challenges, much of our therapy work falls into 1 of 5 areas: Parenting Support and Child/Adolescent Therapy • Men's Issues & Mental/Emotional Health • Relationship Health • Career transition and work-related counselling • Separation and Divorce.
Let's face it, life can feel unbearable at times and relationships and parenting are emotionally taxing. If you're reading this and this is your first time working with a psychologist, this is likely not a high moment for you. Rarely do clients start a session with, "My life is great! Things couldn't be better!" The reality is you're struggling, feeling lost and in pain, things are not going well for you or someone you care about, and we have entered the picture somewhere along the way. That you trust a therapist or anyone else enough to connect with you in that struggle is tough to do, and a responsibility we do not take lightly.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
