Mental health issues can feel like you’re standing at the bottom of a mountain, without the energy to climb it. I believe in using a ladder approach to those mountains - taking each step one rung at a time. Through counselling, we can work on making that mountain more manageable for you. I practice an integrative approach that draws on cognitive behaviour therapy,

I specialize in treating a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, behavioural concerns, substance use, and relational issues and family dynamics, using CBT,
DBT
, ABA, and EMDR. The type of therapy, or combination of types, that best supports your goals is chosen collaboratively, and can look different depending on what you want to achieve. I work with some populations that may require a more specialized approach, including individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, first responders or public safety personnel, and individuals with acquired brain injuries.

Based on client needs and preferences, I practice mostly from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT),
dialectical
behaviour therapy (
DBT
), psychodynamic, and solution-focused lenses.
I strive to use genuine empathy to help clients navigate their experiences from a place of acceptance and nonjudgemental understanding. I understand that allowing oneself to be vulnerable and being willing to look inward and work on oneself can be scary and uncomfortable. With this in mind, I believe in working collaboratively with you to make the process a palatable balance of validation and challenging, and one that is as personally-relevant and meaningful as possible. I believe that counselling can often be the missing piece that can help a person flourish in the face of life’s challenges.

I have training in, and have applied the following modalities in the past: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy,
Dialectical
Behavioral Therapy, MBCT, Mindfulness, and Meditation.
I started my practice to create a space that is healing, safe, and accepting to help you become more resilient, empowered, and content. Life is often difficult, confusing, and disappointing, but you are much more than your bad days, bad months or bad years. I believe that healing comes from recognizing your true self, living authentically, and balancing acceptance and change. With consistency and commitment, it is possible to break out of patterns that no longer serve a purpose. I offer a judgment-free space where I aim to support you in living the life you want, with peace and conviction. Your goals for yourself are within reach.

Life can be unexpected and hard. Just as we experience physical injury, we can also experience life circumstances that impact our mental health. On-going stress, past experiences, or challenging situations (e.g. pandemic, loss, increasing job demands, isolation, ect.), can have an enormous impact on our well-being, causing both emotional and physical distress. Using a practical and evidence-based approach, I work with clients to effectively reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, or trauma; to navigate challenging experiences, and promote lasting and desired change in health and life.

I always tailor my interventions (ACT,
DBT
, ERP) to meet my client’s interests.
Now located in Bridgeland! When it comes to working with children, youth, and young adults, the most common story I hear is that they do not feel seen, understood, or supported. Many young people I work with state that they feel trapped within their own body and mind. Without feeling safe, they are stuck in a continuous loop of fight or flight responses which can lead to meltdowns, school avoidance, and risk taking behaviours. Understanding that they are doing the best they can, I aim to help young people find safety and connection so that they can thrive within systems that do not always support living outside the “standard box.”

Who is DBT for?
DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
