I draw on several models of relational therapy, cognitive and mindfulness approaches.
Are you and your partner easily triggered by each other, creating consistent conflict? Or have you stopped expressing what you feel and think, resulting in loneliness and disconnection? Have either of you communicated that you’re unhappy? Imagine if you could learn how to identify and work on your contribution in a relationship, share thoughts and feelings productively with another person, and listen non-defensively and with curiosity. It’s exciting when people take a risk to engage with others in a different way and feel good about the action they took.

The main therapeutic modalities I use are REBT, CBT and solution-focused.
I am passionate about working with adult individuals who struggle with PTSD and trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief, stress management, and relationship issues. Generally, my clients are functioning quite well in their day-to-day lives, but negative thought patterns and behaviours (which may have served them in the past, but no longer are) tend to get in the way of their ability to cope with work, relationships, etc.

I am a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy ( CBT ) and a Certified Master Accelerated Resolution Therapist (ART) helping people heal from trauma.
I believe we all have the capacity to heal and learn how to live a life worth living, despite challenging and painful experiences in our lives. I believe the coping strategies we develop can start creating problems if we don’t address the underlying cause. Therapy is a safe space to explore, identify, address and resolve these issues, often creating transformational growth. With nearly 30 years’ experience working with, and treating clients with a variety of mental health, addictions and trauma related issues, I have delivered therapy through individual and group work, and I am passionate about both approaches.

When experiencing different situations, we sometimes feel like there is no way out, together we will identify the goals needed to work on, in a cultural and gender sensitive environment, pulling from cognitive behaviour, a solution focused approach using tools and techniques in a safe, confidential manner and supported without judgement. Give me a call and together we will find a solution to your issues and experiences. Should your issue fall outside of my scope of practice, a referral will be made to another professional.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
