How to address challenging times with your child /

5.
Hello and Welcome! I am a psychologist and feel fortunate to do the work I do. Throughout my many years of clinical experience, I have had the opportunity to help various individuals, couples and families live more satisfying lives. In my work, I use a creative and mindful approach to assist individuals and couples in working through personal obstacles and identifying the factors that often lead to frustration and a feeling of being stuck. My commitment is to understand you and assist you in developing techniques that will create preferred experiences in your life.

Does your child or
teenager
have difficulty in school? Are they putting in an extensive amount of time and energy just to get proficient grades? Does it seem like they are not reaching their full potential? Are they struggling to maintain their focus and concentration? Or, do you think they are gifted? As each child is unique in their learning, parents and school based teams often look to psychologists to support individuals who have varying needs. This includes individuals who have learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, Autism, behavior concerns, and who are intellectually gifted.

Recently I've worked at the Mood and Anxiety/OCD clinic and Foothills
adolescent
inpatient unit.
I'm Dr. Lisa Pascal and I'm a child psychologist who specializes in the treatment of moderate to severe mental health challenges including OCD, anxiety disorders, and challenging behaviours. Having suffered from anxiety, perfectionism, and obsessive compulsive behaviours myself, I understand the toll mental health challenges can take. Luckily I came across acceptance and commitment therapy and my whole life changed! Now I'm super passionate about helping children and teens live a meaningful life using these techniques. Although my passion is working with youth, I believe parents play a large role in the treatment process too.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
