substance use
issues, personality disorders, ADHD, mood disorders and trauma related issues.
Therapy and healing from past negative experiences is a journey and having effective support along the way is invaluable. With 20 years of working in mental health, I believe that one of the most powerful elements in healing and achieving a life worth living is authenticity in the therapeutic relationship. I also strive to bring compassion, humour, safety, respect and acceptance to the therapeutic process. Together, we will work to learn new effective coping skills, build on current strengths, take on new challenges that are in alignment with your personal values and goals and, heal from past painful experiences.

We all experience periods in life when we can benefit from professional support and guidance. I'm a PhD level clinical psychologist and my role is to provide a welcoming and non-judgemental space where we can focus on what's important to you. Perhaps you are interested in working on depression or anxiety, integrating a psychedelic experience, managing stress more effectively, or adjusting to one of life’s transitions; perhaps you are interested in exploring long-standing beliefs and patterns that are unhelpful.

Along with helping clients with issues such as stress, anxiety, depression,
substance use
, and other mental health challenges, much of my therapy work falls into 1 of the 5 following areas: Men's Mental Health, Relationship Health, Teens and young adults in transition to adulthood, Career transition and work-related counselling, and Separation and Divorce.
Let's face it, life can be cruel sometimes and relationships are hard. Whether this is your first time working with a psychologist or not, that you are reading this means this is likely not a high moment for you. No client I have ever worked with started a conversation with, "Derrick, I feel really good. My life is great! Things couldn't be better!" The reality is you're struggling, in pain, things are not going well for you or someone you care about, and somewhere along the way, I have entered the picture. That you trust me or anyone else enough to connect with you in your pain is a responsibility I do not take lightly.

Specializing in addiction/
substance use
, LGBTQ+ identities, anxiety, depression and trauma, I would be happy to work with you.
I strive to work with individuals who are looking to better understand their personal and social identity. Emphasis in the counselling field is often given to learning new thought patterns and coping skills. While I do this in my practice and find it effective, I also discuss the concept of 'unlearning' and its importance for growth, allowing us to create a new foundation which is centred on self-awareness. When we unlearn these 'autopilot' ways of responding to situations, we can create a reality where we are actively in the driver’s seat to create the lifestyle and connections that we find authentic, meaningful and long-lasting.

In my practice, I support people in reducing or eliminating their chronic pain utilizing Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and other mind-body approaches. Are you ready to begin transforming the beliefs, emotions, and patterns you hold inside of yourself that keep you from fully living the life that you want? Together we can explore the roots of whatever you are currently wanting help with - be it emotional regulation, self-compassion, relationships, depression, anxiety, addictions, life transitions, sexuality, spirituality, and racial identity. Through my studies, I have learned that creating physical, emotional, and mental safety are foundational components that help us heal. I work with clients to co-create a safe space so that they can focus on cultivating a healthy connection with their physical, emotional, and mental bodies – thus creating more self-awareness. By creating more self-awareness, we can unlock unconscious patterns, repetitive experiences, relationships, and situations that can generate barriers to achieving goals. Below are some things that can be developed in counselling:

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
