I have been a registered psychologist for nearly 40 years. I have been part of the healing journeys for individuals of all ages (child to seniors ), couples and families. I don't know if I have an ideal client other than someone who is open to sharing the story of their life and developing resiliency in some way. With children and youth, they have a special place given their vulnerability and yet wonderful creativity.

I have no doubt that you've done your best to figure out your problems in your own head. And as far as you've been able to get with that, maybe you’re still surprised at how automatically you react to certain situations in your life - like at work, or with a partner. You go a bit numb and don’t know what to say or do, or you react more strongly than you’d like and regret it later. Or maybe you often seem to take things harder than others, and have been called "too sensitive". You often feel misunderstood and struggle to understand yourself sometimes.

INSIGHT & PRACTICE FOR CHANGE: I believe we all have the inherent ability to live a meaningful, satisfying, and connected life. At some point most people will become aware or begin to feel that they are somehow "off course", that "something needs to change" or that something new is desired. This realization is an opportunity to "adjust course", take stock, and intentionally re-align our lives. Sometimes small shifts can make incredible differences; other times we are called to dig deep. Whether you want to make personal, professional or relationship shifts, by reaching out to me you can trust that the change process has already started.

I specialize in working with individuals who want to process anxiety, depression and trauma in various stages of their lives. When working with you, I take into consideration not only what is happening in your life now, but also what has happened in the past to influence your current attitudes, beliefs and responses. Through our work together you may gain insight and become more conscious of your feelings and beliefs that can typically override your best intentions and thoughts. I will seek to tap into your strengths while equipping you to use these to make the changes you want. I also integrate a Christian Perspective if desired.

During times of heightened stress symptoms related to anxiety, panic, and depression worsen and it can be very hard to maintain hope and positivity during this global crisis. Self-isolating, social distancing, and quarantine are helpful to keep everyone as safe as possible during COVID19, but this also puts added pressure on individuals residing alone, on relationships, and on families. I am passionate about mental and emotional health, and I am available to help you and your loved ones throughout this pandemic and beyond.

Salam and hello. A client once shared a quote by Ram Dass that resonated with me: "We're all just walking each other home." Every time I "walk a client home," I feel honoured. I believe that everyone is born with immense amount of strength, but it can be hard to see your strength when you are going through a hard time. My work as a psychologist is built on the foundation of trusting relationship, non-judgmental space, and the positive regard I offer to my clients. I work collaboratively with my clients, supporting them in acknowledging and embracing their strengths and moving gently towards change.

If you're struggling with mental health or relationship challenges, it can feel like your life is out of control and falling apart. It's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed, scared, hopeless, helpless and alone. Or to feel numb. We all experience occasional difficulties in response to life’s challenges, but there are times when we feel particularly stuck or discouraged and we need some extra support. It can be difficult to share your most private experiences with someone new, especially if those experiences have caused you shame. At Monarch Psychology, we have a deep respect for those who are willing to pursue counselling.

I currently work in health care, supporting veterans and first responders. With my private practice, I’m proud to be a part of the Riverwest Therapy Collective. I love working with service members (military, police, health care workers) and anyone who feels that they might be a good fit with my approach - it's all about connection! I take a trauma-informed approach with my work; invitational, compassionate, and person-centered. Additionally, I am registered with the British Columbia College of Social Workers, and am able to provide therapy via telehealth to BC clients.

How can I find a therapist in Southwest Calgary, Calgary?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
