My approach is rooted in CBT , ACT, DBT, solution-focused, narrative, and Gottman techniques.
Our journey in life is wrought with obstacles, twists, and turns that can feel overwhelming. Some of the barriers we face are erected by outside forces: events in our lives, identities we had no influence over, social structures we cannot dismantle on our own. Others we unwittingly create or amplify ourselves. Most of us need some help along the way. I admire the courage it takes to seek this help and I’m confident that I can effectively guide you toward improved mental health and wellbeing. I don’t think that most mental health concerns are rooted in “distorted” views of the world; the views are merely incomplete.

I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT ), Gottman Method for Couples Therapy (Level II), Relational Life Therapy Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and Transactional Analysis (TA).
The human experience is both wearisome and wondrous. My role is to provide compassion, therapeutic knowledge, keenly observe strengths, and barriers to help you navigate the wearisome so that you can fully enjoy the wondrous. Working with clients, helping them to develop self-compassion, acquire flexibility in their approach to life, and learn robust coping skills is a deeply satisfying part of my work. I’ve observed that couples are wanting more from their relationships, yet we aren’t taught skills which allow us to relate well. I guide couples as they acquire tools which foster better communication and relationship skills.

I am a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy ( CBT ) and a Certified Master Accelerated Resolution Therapist (ART) helping people heal from trauma.
I believe we all have the capacity to heal and learn how to live a life worth living, despite challenging and painful experiences in our lives. I believe the coping strategies we develop can start creating problems if we don’t address the underlying cause. Therapy is a safe space to explore, identify, address and resolve these issues, often creating transformational growth. With nearly 30 years’ experience working with, and treating clients with a variety of mental health, addictions and trauma related issues, I have delivered therapy through individual and group work, and I am passionate about both approaches.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
