Along with helping clients with issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance use and other mental health challenges, much of our therapy work falls into 1 of 5 areas: Parenting Support and Child/ Adolescent Therapy • Men's Issues & Mental/Emotional Health • Relationship Health • Career transition and work-related counselling • Separation and Divorce.
Let's face it, life can feel unbearable at times and relationships and parenting are emotionally taxing. If you're reading this and this is your first time working with a psychologist, this is likely not a high moment for you. Rarely do clients start a session with, "My life is great! Things couldn't be better!" The reality is you're struggling, feeling lost and in pain, things are not going well for you or someone you care about, and we have entered the picture somewhere along the way. That you trust a therapist or anyone else enough to connect with you in that struggle is tough to do, and a responsibility we do not take lightly.

Are you craving a life you don't need a vacation from? We don't exist in isolation. Daily, we navigate relationships, careers, finances, parenting an anxious child or a struggling teen, aging, significant life transitions, celebrations, successes, and sometimes huge losses. You may have lost a job, partner, loved one, or the ability to function in ways you used to function so easily. You are used to recovering quickly or knowing how to best provide support, and yet find yourself at a loss, anxious, overwhelmed or discouraged. It's all part of being human. Though sometimes it feels like more than we can take.

A note here to parents - in addition to pre/ adolescent eating and body image concerns, I have over 15 years experience in working with this age in schools and in my practice.
Hi there! Welcome :) As I am just coming back to work after maternity leave, I have room for new clients with little wait time! I specialize in the very big spectrum of disordered eating/ED and related issues. Perhaps you’re reading this because you’re tired of thinking about food all the time, counting calories, body checking, and not feeling great about yourself? Or perhaps you’re concerned about a loved one or child? These thoughts and feelings can take up a lot of mind space and be emotionally painful and I suspect you know exactly what I mean by that. If you’re looking for a way out, you’re in the right spot here!

There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes, life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child, adolescent, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
