There’s a phrase that resonates so well in our northern hemisphere: feeling snowed under. It brings a rather-Canadian image to mind along with a feeling of overwhelm. Sometimes life feels like we’ve been left snowed under and we find ourselves spinning our wheels. It can be exhausting. I’m here to help. I’ve worked in child,
adolescent
, family and young adult mental health for over 20 years. I’m a parent, a partner, a professional in the field, and the learning never ends. Whether it’s raising our families or learning about the relationships we hold within ourselves, there are ways to decrease the distress and find an easier path.

Does your child or
teenager
have difficulty in school? Are they putting in an extensive amount of time and energy just to get proficient grades? Does it seem like they are not reaching their full potential? Are they struggling to maintain their focus and concentration? Or, do you think they are gifted? As each child is unique in their learning, parents and school based teams often look to psychologists to support individuals who have varying needs. This includes individuals who have learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, Autism, behavior concerns, and who are intellectually gifted.

Unlike a generalist counsellor, my therapeutic services are tailored to the distinct developmental needs of children and teens. I blend creative and evidence-based treatment approaches. Is your child or
teen
struggling with anxiety, a lack of self-esteem or low mood? Does it seem like it started off small but feels like it is escalating and you are unsure of how to help them or effectively intervene? Growing up can be hard. Many children and teens today face increased anxiety, social challenges, learning difficulties, depression, loss or family challenges like divorce or illness of a parent or loved one. There can even be a sense of loss in the addition of a family member like a new baby, or new partner.

Are you craving a life you don't need a vacation from? We don't exist in isolation. Daily, we navigate relationships, careers, finances, parenting an anxious child or a struggling
teen
, aging, significant life transitions, celebrations, successes, and sometimes huge losses. You may have lost a job, partner, loved one, or the ability to function in ways you used to function so easily. You are used to recovering quickly or knowing how to best provide support, and yet find yourself at a loss, anxious, overwhelmed or discouraged. It's all part of being human. Though sometimes it feels like more than we can take.

Life is full of experiences, and those experiences shape who we are as individuals. I work with children,
teen
, and young adults to understand their experiences, and the emotions tied to those experiences. I help clients to begin to walk down a path of change, allowing a person to move forward by acknowledging past behaviours, and envisioning and setting goals for the here-and-now and their future self.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
