We all experience struggles and pain in life and when we do, we seek relief by finding ways to avoid knowing the details of our struggles. Yet, no matter how well we push the pain aside, it continually resurfaces, desperately pleading us to not avoid gaining a greater understanding of ourselves.

Choice. A small word with big meaning. We make choices everyday; every moment. These choices influence our well-being, yet understanding and gaining control over one's choices can feel overwhelming at times and create anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues or other consequences from emotional dysregulation. Regaining control of your emotions and behaviours is where Charis with Choosing Change can help. Through gentle support and guidance, we will work together to find understanding of the issues affecting your well-being. With understanding comes awareness and the ability to make different choices. We choose to make changes.

I entered this profession to help people shoulder the weight of the responsibilities they may face; the roles of being a friend, partner, family member, employee, business owner, teacher, coach or many of the other hats we wear can make us feel bogged down. Attending to your own needs is not selfish, you cannot pour from an empty cup. You might be looking for someone to listen, objectively, and without judgment; someone to create a space for connection.

Something isn’t working. Each day you go to work feeling anxious, annoyed and tired after a restless night. You feel stuck, like there’s no way out of this situation and you can’t see your future beyond the reprieve of the upcoming weekend. You’ve expressed how you feel to those close to you, but it’s starting to feel like all you do is complain so you keep it to yourself. Holding onto the weight of problems often leads to mental and physical exhaustion. I work with clients through difficulties at work as well as at home with family members and in other important relationships. If you’re stuck I’ll help in finding a new path forward

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
