About
In 30 years of practice, I have gained much insight and expertise in supporting clients. They often shared the belief they were to blame for their struggles, feeling that this made "sense of the world" (it's gotta be me, right?) This burden impaired their efforts to live a rich and fulfilling life (one with passion, healthy relationships and joy). The goal of eliminating that self-blame is necessary, it frees people to know they are deserving. It also helps to tap into existing strengths and abilities. The best outcome in therapy is when people remember themselves, their values and gain "connection" & the skills for life happiness.
With a trauma-informed lens, therapy can help create safety in exploring the thoughts/ feelings that either misguide or overwhelm us. It's also powerful when one can build on the "exceptions to the problem" and remember inner skills and strengths. Sometimes, it's about learning the skills to manage emotions with self compassion and acceptance.
Our biological/ inter-generational histories, in combination with life stressors can make our ability to cope less effective (trauma, family conflict, addictions). Having experienced trauma, I know strategies can be helpful in the moment but then prove more harmful/damaging to relationships/one's self-worth in the long run. New strategies, change is possible.
