Support Groups in Burnaby, BC

Most of us never learned to talk about food in a meaningful way. Instead, we were praised, shamed, or guilted for the way we ate—turning food into a source of judgment rather than nourishment. As a nutritionist, I’ve longed to offer a version of health that isn’t tied to willpower, discipline, or self-worth. But I’ve also seen how deeply disordered eating mindsets can run. Like any meaningful value, it takes intention and effort. This group is for those who hope to learn to talk about food with compassion & intention.

You’re exhausted, but you keep pushing because it feels like there’s no other option. Deep down, you know this isn’t sustainable. You wonder if there is a version of you that feels grounded, someone who isn’t always running on empty. As a child of immigrants, I deeply understand the tension between self-acceptance and self-improvement. Working within a person-centered framework, I use tools from motivational interviewing, CBT and ACT to untangle how your thoughts, actions, emotions and values shape your world. Together, we will create sustainable strategies for growth that honour both your well-being and your aspirations.

Mid 20's to mid 30's is a time of transition for women - moving from the defined roles of student and adolescent, to the complicated role of adult. Women experience increased pressure to answer life's big questions - what do I value? how do I create healthy relationships? what are my priorities? what is my purpose? who am I? If these questions are poignant and compelling to you, you are invited to join a group of like-minded young women working to author conscious, meaningful answers. The group will incorporate modalities including conversation, art, writing, visualization.

Hello! I'm Meredith MacKenzie and I help women who feel out of control with food, tired of swinging from dieting to binge eating, leading to feel shame about their eating. You know the ins and outs of "healthy eating" but it just doesn't seem to work, and you blame yourself. You want freedom from food, to be able to eat what you love without overeating, and have a better relationship with your body. You want to be more attuned to your hunger and fullness cues and at peace with food, so you can more fully participate in your life without your feelings about your body or emotional eating looming over you. You deserve more.

I offer online supervision, in a friendly, collaborative environment. Meeting on a regular basis with a trusted core group of therapists can provide a great feeling of a community. This format is limited to a small number of practitioners, which allows more time per person to confidentially discuss case files, share knowledge, and discuss treatment options with fellow group members. Groups are open to trainee counsellors as well as experienced practitioners. Individual 1 hr sessions: $120, Group - 3 hr sessions: $140. Group meetings are either topic led or case file discussions.

Some autistic children have curiosity and intense fascination with morbid topics (murder, death, gore), manifesting in dark, imaginative play. Interestingly, these children are often very sensitive, anxious, and delicate. The neurotypical culture stigmatizes this type of play, and autistic children may have received negative feedback for expressing and playing this way. This is group counselling explicitly focusing on safely exploring, processing, and witnessing this morbid fascination. Therapeutically, these imaginations are the fertile ground on which autistic collective trauma can be processed. Children will also be practicing pre-scene negotiation, personal boundaries, self-advocacy, and post-scene harvesting.

Children and families are often referred to me by other counsellors or health professionals because "the kid refuses to talk or cooperate" or "we tried everything and nothing works". Families often seek my specialties to explore their children's behaviours and challenges from the developmental lens. Neurodivergent children look forward to seeing me because they feel I am safe, and fun, and can easily connect with them in a special and meaningful way. I cannot work with autistic children receiving ABA treatment as it is contraindicative with my strong commitment to neurodiversity affirmative and disability ethical principles.

I deeply appreciate the journey toward health for people struggling with their mental health and the need for caregivers around them to support the process. I honor time with caregivers and enjoy this part of the process. When working with trauma and other mental health challenges I work at the pace of the client, to facilitate healing and growth using a variety of techniques and tools. Another part of my work that I truly enjoy is the supervision aspect with either new clinicians, or experienced clinicians desiring support, recovery from burnout, or rediscovering joy.

In just one session, my client was relieved for his work related stress and anxiety. Or she overcame difficult life decisions and recovered from the grief and loss that has been bothering her for 6+ months. Yes, I am the counsellor who you just need to talk to for a professional advice. Some come to me for short-term service to gain knowledge and skills to deal with relationship, parenting, marriage or emotional regulation issues. They found the practical skills they gain to be life changing. For others, they see me for long term and regular support for self-growth and childhood trauma. FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Burnaby?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, postal code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postal code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counselling is typically less expensive than individual counselling, with each session costing on average about $90 to $100. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your group therapy sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for group therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
