In the initial MTA study there is a disconnect between the discussion section and their own published tables. I emailed the editors but they never replied. I also emailed Peter Jensen and he replied that I was correct, it was a mistake, but that he didn’t see a need to correct it.
On page 1077 they state that according to the teachers, the children on medication were better off in terms of both hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention. However, Table 5 (p. 1082) in the results section contradicts this statement; it shows that according to the teachers, the medicated students were better off in terms of inattention but not hyperactivity. It’s not a gigantic error but it seems like it should have been corrected. The only justification I can see for not correcting it is an acknowledgement that the authors discussion is really not that important.
