I tend to think that people who are stuck living with a very specific set of rules imposed from the outside with the threat of rejection from their family and community for not complying would often have repressed feelings that can come up with a vengeance. They might lose touch with their internal compass and their own natural sense of empathy more easily due to the pressure of the group.
