Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

Would this still be true if we didn't have the tendency to make ourselves look as good as possible on social media like Facebook? I read that the predominant emotion associated with Facebook is envy. If people were more honest, or didn't try to big themselves up so much, would social media still have this effect?
