Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I was moved by this article.
I can imagine that the clergy and those in the mental health field are struggling with comforting those who are hurting now.
I haven't been to church since March. I could do online masses, but it feels flat, I don't get much out of it. I miss being with other congregants when I'm observing a mass.
I agree, this virus is not because we are awful human beings. It is like everthing else in the natural world, as awful as it is.
This will end with some other challenges to be faced.
I've lived long enough to know this to be true.
