Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I have seen this and the women(mostly 30 something singles) have made a commitment, become sexually involved, and try to double down and save their bet. It is embarrassing in the community and makes her look foolish. Usually these guys are "high status" and they can see a shortcut to an instant family and acceptance but it never seems to work well. In the old days the community shame would have prevented it, but now so many movies(even Disney!) have the cool dad with the young wife that women fall for it and men don't refuse the "new" sex. Never would happen to me but sa long time "townie" with connections I have seen it a few times
