I think you forgot the obvious: when people are feeling low (and I don't necessarily mean depression) and stressed they often don't have the motivation to keep up with stuff, which causes more negative feelings and makes a vicious cycle. I think the issue begins with feeling low (caused by a habit of negative thinking) in the first place.
