Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I am a gay man but I find this article very political and not psychological. Personally I believe in individual rights. For me I have always thought: This life and body of mine belongs to me. It does not belong to my friends, family, tribe or government. But still today you can hear everybody wanting to tell me what I should do with my life. Conservatives don’t want me to marry a man. Liberals don’t want me to take drugs like steroids. My life and body belongs to me I should be able to live and do with it what I want.
