Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

Sometimes it does all turn out wrong. The business you've always wanted to start...fails. The guy you thought was right for you...turns out to be abusive. The move to that place you've always dreamed about...leaves you with no friends, no job and no way back to the familiar.
If this sounds like the voice of experience...good. Cause it is. That is exactly what happened to me. I took the leap of faith. I did the thing I never did...I just believed I could and tried.
I have failed spectacularly. In ways that would define the word "epic".
My question to the great void is...
How do you bounce back form that?
When it does all go wrong?
When you know the horrible thing that probably won't happen has done just that?
