This sounds like it is potentially dangerous to everyone but it is mostly pointed towards new/young users.
I have never seen this occur in the drug addicts I knew, and I knew a lot of them.
Alcoholism
The Dangers of Combining Alcohol and Marijuana
Using pot and alcohol together can lead to injury, illness, and even death.
Posted May 06, 2014
Alcohol and marijuana are two drugs commonly used by people at the same time. New information indicates that combining the two may cause individuals to overuse both substances, which in some cases can result in death.
The danger of drinking before smoking is severe illness. A side effect of smoking marijuana, called “greening out,” is more likely to occur if a person drinks alcohol before smoking.
Greening out is a term used to describe a situation where a person may feel sick after smoking marijuana. The individual may go pale and sweaty, feel dizzy with “the spins,” get nauseous, and may even start vomiting. This is often followed by the need or strong desire to lie down.
Smoking marijuana and then drinking alcohol can lead to death. When recreational drinking and smoking are combined, it is easier to drink excessively and risk alcohol poisoning, which can kill you.
According to Northeastern University, marijuana has an antiemetic effect, meaning that it makes it more difficult for the body to vomit.
Usually, when a person drinks too much alcohol, the body responds by vomiting in order to rid itself of the excess alcohol. Since marijuana helps prevent vomiting, the body may be unable to rid itself of dangerous toxins, or an individual may choke on the vomit that is produced.
Used together, alcohol and marijuana can also create paranoia, causing people to make flawed or even fatal choices. Alcohol and marijuana are both depressants, which work by slowing down the central nervous system. An ingredient of marijuana is THC, which is absorbed into the blood faster when alcohol is also present. The magnified effects of using these substances together can be very unpredictable and may cause panic, anxiety, or terror for people who use both substances in the same period.
Little research has been done on combining alcohol and marijuana, but the indications are that there can be major risks. No matter what substances you are using, please consult a physician before combining them, and please always use substances responsibly.
This sounds like it is
comment
I've been drinking beer and smoking weed together for 47 rs. No problems here. And i enjoy it. Looking forward to marijuana being legal here in NY soon.
I combine marijuana and
I combine marijuana and alcohol in responsible amounts almost daily and I find it to be a peaceful interaction. The marijuana taken in small amounts with a couple cocktails spaced apart and a meal in between drinks is gentle enough for my body. When I smoke or vaporize marijuana it helps me pace myself with the drinking. As far as for weed preventing vomiting, most people aren't drinking enough to need to throw up. I know a lot marijuana users and none of them are binge drinkers. The interaction you are describing sounds like it is targeted to young people who are new to drinking and have no sense of moderation. Perhaps you should mention in your article that not every combined drinker/marijuana user will face these problems when common sense and moderation is applied.
Exactly what I was thinking
Exactly what I was thinking when I read this. The way the article is worded makes it seem like the effects of cannabis exacerbate the effects of alcohol or vice versa, when really they're pointing out weed might make you not throw up if you drink lethal doses of alcohol. Most people don't drink to the point of needing to throw up to keep themselves from dying from an overdose so weed has no adverse effect for most people.
gag reflex/vomiting
Marijuana does nothing to inhibit the gag reflex nor vomiting. It is safe to need to vomit while on marijuana.
So, you didn't read this did you?
It doesn't say its "not safe" it says weed as an effect similar to the effects one obtains from taking anti-sickness medication. So if you need to throw up from drinking too much, the weed you smoke with it may stop you from being sick.
When you are drunk, the body responds by making you sick, weed sometimes doesn't allow your body to respond in this way. Does this need to be made clearer for you?
If so, THIS IS SCIENCE.
i do it
Ive been drinking and smoking together since i was 18, i used to go out as high as ever, while driving.... drink all night til like 2 or 3, drive home with no problem, get even higher.. and go to sleep.. the only times i ever pued was when i drank way too much, im 20 years old now, never had a trip experience, neither have i ever became ill from smoking weed, but im tired of them both now, i even caused myself a stomach ucler so im gonna take a 6 months break.. my brain really needs it.. btw does anybody think 6 months without drinking and smoking is enough to feel a difference? i just feel really cloudy and dull
it happened to me
Everybody is different I guess. But it happened to me. I drank before I smoked. I did not drink enough to give me alcohol poisoning, but enough to make me pretty drunk. I thought I only had two bowls but apparently I had more than that. It became hard for me to walk and my boyfriend guided me to the car. When we got home he had to carry me because I couldn't walk. Then I started panicking hysterically. I felt so nautious and I couldn't puke. I was trembling and crying one minute and laughing the next. My boyfriend tried to calm me down but it was like he wasn't even there. I felt like I was going to die. Finally I threw up and it lasted for hours. It was a constant cycle of me throwing up, passing out, him waking me up, me panicking, and throwing up again.
Crossfade
Hey how long did it last because I drank a lot I think and smoked and I passed out unconscious and it was like on Sunday 3:00am so basically Monday in the morning I felt shaky asf and now Tuesday night I woke up a little paranoid is this normal upon crossfade
Mixing them together
Not long ago I mixed weed with alchcol and it caused a harmful affect that harmed me and my friends, I had quite a lot to drink, almost 7 cups of vodka and I'm a lightweight, then my friends convinced me to try weed for the first time I didn't think about the affects as I was drunk, not long after I didn't know what was happening I started getting panic attacks and was very paranoia and scared, I Rememever crying an hiding from friends in weird places like behind gas tanks and things, and I also harmed myself by cutting my arm (My friends ended up helping me) I went to bed and woke up forgetting eveything that happened that night, I have been drunk before and I have rememberd things the next day but the first time I mixed weed with alchcol really intoxicated me and it is very dangerous.
This is a strong and abnormal
This is a strong and abnormal response to mixing alcohol and marijuana. Please see an addiction specialist (physician) right away to discuss this experience.
I need support
Ha buddy I am suffering from same issue right now the same story of urs just a change in that but after 1 month also without smoking weed I lost my control on Mind . NEVER AGAIN
I have to say, I drink and smoke, but never together. I decided to try it. Had a bowl on me, and I was pretty drunk. I was always told that if you smoke enough, you won't feel drunk, but just really high. WRONG. I have never been so sick in my life. I was sweating, I could barely see, and I had to be walked to my bedroom. Threw up, had a full blown panic attack, and my body went into shock. I was pouring sweat, but I was so cold. I would not reccomend doing this. I felt like I was going to die.
Death?
Give me a break.... Death? I want empirical evidence for such a ridiculous claim. Prove it! Show me a case where some drank alcohol, smoked marijuana, and then died. Unbelievable!
There's ignorance and then there is willful ignorance
Countless examples of fatal car accidents that involved a lot of alcohol and weed combos.
What are you, stupid?
Wrong
The comment you're responding to states there is no death from Alcohol and Weed itself.
The article claims it can result in death.
The weed/alcohol combo has not been proven to be fatal on it's own.
Traffic accidents due to being under the influence of drugs does not make the drug itself fatal.
We don't call shrooms a lethal poison because people act out in public on them and can make decisions that will get them killed.
That's not the substance, that's the user.
Is the substance combination lethal?
No study has been done.
Can it lead to you making lethal stupid decisions?
Ofc.
Reaction
I just drink whisky before smoking weed and the reaction stayed in my body for 6 days and on the 7th day I was normal but after 1 month I drink alcohol again and now I think the reaction has came back I cannot concentrate. It's now 5 days I am high again . I need u to tell me how can I be normal again
Just did it.
I'm a light weight toker, heavy weight drinker. I get super lazy, and wasted when I combine the 2. I just did it and am tired and ready for bed. Been doing this for 2 years now. I'm still alive. Key thing is to know you limits. If 1 bowl sends you to the moon and back and 2 beers get you drunk, not a good I idea. If 1 bowl or 1 24 pack get you wasted then party on.
Think about it.
If one starts to feel sick after smoking when drunk, what is the likelihood to continue to drink to a deadly level? Personally when I drink and take a puff from a joint I don't feel for drinking more. When I was younger I have experienced that "bad" feeling when being drunk and smoked more than I could handle. And I can promise that you are not up for another drink when that happens.
Ridiculous
These are lies. Outright lies by people who make children look like adults.
Marijuana and Alcohol
Marijuana does not cause you to get more drunk. These people are the reason your teenager uses drugs! It's these idiots who told them marijuana is serious that we have to thank for the amphetamine epidemic!!!
Am i ok???
Me and a couple friends went out and we had alcohol i drank some vodak and it wasn't alot then i took three big chugs of some fireball after that i took 3 big hits of a blunt after that i waz feelin fine but then i felt weird and my body started to shake then i asked my friend to take me home when i got home i shaked for hours. The next day i still felt the same but i felt extremely paranoid this has went on for days. Today is friday and i had drank and smoked sunday its been 6 days im feelin a little better but im still paranoid but not as much. Am i ok?
really??
"According to Northeastern University, marijuana has an antiemetic effect, meaning that it makes it more difficult for the body to vomit."
Antiemetic effect? You mean, really, that it is the best dysphemism for antinauseant to date. Find something better to do, this is a terrible article written by someone with zero experience or knowledge. Marijuana cures cancer (among a plethora of others). Do your research, don't purport garbage.
What's wrong with saying
What's wrong with saying antiemetic? The best dysphemism for antinauseant to date? It's basic medical terminology. The word has been in use for hundreds of years.
Wrong
Marijuana doesn't inhibit vomiting: it subdues nausea.
I have had a hiatal hernia repaired and I know what it's like to have an inhibited ability to throw up. If you needed to get something out, you'd be in trouble.
Marijuana does not interfere with the body's ability to vomit.
Ridiculous
Smoking cannabis and drinking doesn't lead to death. The so-called "multiplier effect" is grossly overstated.
The only real adverse effect to combining the two is if you've drank to the point of nearly being in the spins, marijuana will put you into them.
The information being communicated here is so inaccurate and ridiculous that it's scary.
If you have data, show it.
I am always amazed at the way individuals feel they can anonymously address facts with opinion.
The FACTS are that when one drinks and smokes marijuana, both to excess, the odds or alcohol poisoning greatly increase, and that condition can lead to death. This is especially important for young people to know, because if one of their friends does get into this situation, they need to be transported to the hospital for treatment.
The FACTS are also that those who mix marijuana and alcohol find themselves less inhibited than normal and may make poor choices, including operating a motor vehicle or getting in a car with someone who is too wasted to drive. That too can result in death or other life-altering outcomes.
The FACTS are what should scare you, not that someone makes them public.
Multiplier effect
The multiplier effect of mixing cannabis and alcohol is grossly overstated. Do you think that mixing the two produces a significant effect?
If you answered yes, you must have never experienced it yourself.
Now, I don't know if marijuana increases the effects of alcohol, though there is evidence in how smoking cannabis after drinking to nearly the spins can kick that process in.
I have never noticed any motor skill difference after smoking cannabis with alcohol. Furthermore, THC has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory neuroprotective qualities that prevent and reverse the brain damage associated with alcohol and drug abuse.
It may hurt your brain in other ways, however. Admit that the multiplier effect is grossly overstated by so-called "experts" and then hit up good old Fox News for coverage on the marijuana + alcohol is better than alcohol alone thing.
Warning
I am going to warn you about this. The DEA says that marijuana is less medically viable and more addictive than amphetamines and cocaine.
They even have CBD as a *specific* Schedule 1 drug. The chemical has no psychoactive properties, is non-addictive and treats previously intractable seizure disorders.
Children will die because the DEA won't allow marijuana to be used as medicine. If you trust these so-called "experts" who tell you that marijuana is more serious than alcohol, you are being fooled.
Anyone associated with addiction therapy may have a vested interest in marijuana being more dangerous than alcohol, which is so ridiculous it's insulting.
It is the neuroprotective, anti-oxidant anti-inflammatory properties of CBD that treat these diseases of the brain. THC has its own take and it prevents and REVERSES AFTER THE FACT brain damage from physical trauma, oxygen deprivation and TOXIC DRUG EXPOSURE, SUCH AS ALCOHOL ABUSE.
Final Warning
Here is your last chance to wake up:
When you tell kids that marijuana is serious and worse than alcohol, when you tell kids that marijuana is a drug like any other, you are doing a great disservice to the youth of this country.
It is dangerous to lie to children about drugs. You should be more honest with yourself and realize that cannabis is vastly safer and less intoxicating than alcohol. It doesn't impact judgment, it doesn't impact motor skills nearly as much nor in the same way as alcohol (muscle relaxation, anyone??), it doesn't promote violence and it doesn't promote promiscuity.
It also is NOT A DATE-RAPE DRUG, unlike with alcohol abuse.
If you want to tell kids the FACTS on drugs, that is fine. Telling kids lies like I was told means that if you equate marijuana to drugs like crack, you equate drugs like crack to marijuana.
Marijuana is safer than alcohol and telling kids otherwise is the true dangerous message. Your anti-drug agenda is rooted in falsehoods and misinformation.
Until marijuana is accepted as safer than alcohol, you have no credibility whatsoever.

Abstract
Cannabidiol and other cannabinoids were examined as neuroprotectants in rat cortical neuron cultures exposed to toxic levels of the neurotransmitter, glutamate. The psychotropic cannabinoid receptor agonist delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol, (a non-psychoactive constituent of marijuana), both reduced NMDA, AMPA and kainate receptor mediated neurotoxicities. Neuroprotection was not affected by cannabinoid receptor antagonist, indicating a (cannabinoid) receptor-independent mechanism of action. Glutamate toxicity can be reduced by antioxidants. Using cyclic voltametry and a fenton reaction based system, it was demonstrated that Cannabidiol, THC and other cannabinoids are potent antioxidants. As evidence that cannabinoids can act as an antioxidants in neuronal cultures, cannabidiol was demonstrated to reduce hydroperoxide toxicity in neurons. In a head to head trial of the abilities of various antioxidants to prevent glutamate toxicity, cannabidiol was superior to both alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate in protective capacity. Recent preliminary studies in a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia suggest that cannabidiol may be at least as effective in vivo as seen in these in vitro studies.
GREENING OUT
There is no such thing as "greening out". This woman is crazy and so are you for eating up these OUTRIGHT LIES.
Vomiting
One more thing. Marijuana will not save you from being the porcelain king.
See you in the morning!!
Crazy
This woman is crazy and you are fools for believing the 3% of America who still stand against CBD for intractable epilepsy. No one in their right mind accepts Schedule 1 for THC or CBD and these crazy effects she and the people here are talking about DON'T HAPPEN!
Crazy Pt.2
In case you didn't notice, these crazy effects this woman is describing don't even happen on hard drugs, let alone a drug that's less toxic, intoxicating and consequential than alcohol.
Marijuana does not produce these crazy effects that happen with intravenous injection. People only get effects like these from injecting real drugs.
Greening out
Hi there,
It's decades ago for me, but i thought it worth sharing, and Dr your blog goes back 2014, but here goes.
I have smoked dope 3 times at age 18 to 19. All 3 times after a period of binge drinking. 1st time, was very terrifing, felt lke my windpipe was closing, heart slowing right down, went into a complete collapse, struggled to breathe, unconscious, with help came around and proceeded to vomit and then felt very sober.
Slow learner
2nd time at least an hour in the woman's toilet holding on for dear life, room spinning, could even balance sitting on a toilet seat, heart and breathing became difficult. Had to lay on bathroom floor for ages before it felt ok to get up. Don't trust people you are with, nobody new, missed me or checked up on me. I could have died and rotted.
3rd time not so bad, but did hit paranoia and suicidal thinking, end up walking a bridge railing before having to get of and lay down to stop vomiting. Never touched the stuff again
stop the foolishness
Stop being manipulative and falsely connecting your depression and alcoholism with recreational marijuana use.
Also, there is not one state in this country with legal weed where you can consume NOR PURCHASE alcohol, as marijuana does not want you to confuse the dire consequences of alcohol use with the less intoxicating, addictive and toxic marijuana.
Don't believe the propaganda you see here, people. You can't trust these so-called "experts". Anyone with any common sense and experience knows better than to trust these fools whose ignorance leads to the use of real drugs.
How? Kids find out you were lying about all these INSANE side effects that don't even happen on METH, let alone the weakest and least toxic and otherwise least harmful substance and then start experimenting with very harmful things because YOU TOLD THEM MARIJUANA WAS A DRUG LIKE ANY OTHER!
The bottom line
The bottom line: marijuana is less intoxicating and less harmful physically and socially.
Marijuana does not produce euphoria nor body high, unlike alcohol abuse. Marijuana does not disrupt sleep, nor does it impair judgment.
It does impair motor skills, but not in the same way nor as much as alcohol.
Marijuana is a less harmful and consequential substance than alcohol, let alone the abuse of real drugs. You are dishonest and manipulative with your data and I will not allow you to confuse these completely separate matters for any effect nor experience as a marijuana user.
If you still want to believe these manipulations and falsehoods (manipulations like claiming the effects of drinking too much happen as a marijuana user), you are a hopeless case and hopefully someone informs you that seeking a prostitute shouldn't be a 3-5 year prison term and a felony conviction that even the judge I saw wasn't giving to the guy who broke all the windows in the person's house.
Please read carefully
TC, if you read the article carefully, the danger is combining marijuana and alcohol. Marijuana depresses the ability to vomit, so when a person uses alcohol and marijuana in excess and at the same time, there can be increased possibility of complications from alcohol poisoning or choking hazard, because of the way marijuana limits the ability to vomit properly.
Difficulty vomiting
This is the last time I set the record straight. Marijuana doesn't inhibit vomiting nor the gag reflex.
Anyone who chooses to believe these lies, falsehoods and false connections to adverse life events and other choices such as alcohol abuse and its myriad related issues (both physically as well as psychologically and socially) is failing to take heed of my very reasonable and well-worded words of warning as to these crack pot "experts" and their addiction therapy-based analysis.
I was be very blunt with you: you are reading lies. Outright lies. Also, there are people who have suffered horribly through adverse life events, mental illness, marital and employment difficulties and other life issues that are falsely connecting recreational marijuana use with these things.
It is like saying to every 21 year old that if they begin a recreational drinking habit they are definitively going to get a divorce and lose custody of the kids.
That's just not normal, despite it happening to many people. I'm sorry.
You do not have a worst case scenario with every single average case of alcoholism. That is the stuff of fools and those who would eat up such sensationalist propaganda distortions of real life events and things.
Your moment
Oh, one more thing. Anyone who thinks alcoholics with the spins lay down to solve their suffering is horribly, horribly mistaken.
You just have to trust me.
classic propaganda
I feel like a lot of these comments are obvious "shills" doing the FUD campaign thing (fear, uncertainty, doubt).
Yes, obviously, if you drink yourself into a blackout and go driving around smoking weed, you have a good change of killing yourself. Thats true regardless of the cannabis. Most of the "deadly" things she stated are true in themselves, and have nothing to do with weed. Its not cannabis that is the danger, it is the extremely high BAC that will kill you. I don't understand how cannabis was suddenly thrown in with alcohols toxic effects.
These comments about people freaking out for days, cannot be attributed to weed. If those stories are true, a big IF, then its due to underlying psychological problems already present, and its probably better that they confronted these issues.
The authors claim that cannabis will stop you from vomiting when you normally would from too much alcohol, is just complete BS. I can tell you from personal experience, if you are too drunk and try to smoke, the result is instant throwing up. In fact, most of the times i've thrown up while drinking, was because i also smoked weed, it was the weed that made me throw up. Whereas if i didn't smoke, i would have sat there already too drunk with more alcohol in my stomach to be absorbed, but if i took a couple hits, my body would instantly say "get rid of this alcohol".
But we are talking about alcohol excess here, which is the real danger. If someone is only having a couple drinks, and smokes a couple hits, most likely they will feel fine. Moderation is the key. Alcohol can be extremely dangerous to the body in large amounts. This is not true for cannabis, and has been proven many times. The feeling may become uncomfortable with too much weed, but not physically dangerous. And thats a whole separate side topic of cannabis tolerance, people need to know how weed effects themselves before they try it all drunk one night. Depending on tolerance, one hit may effect you like an entire joint would another person who smokes a lot.
The key is moderation. And like many already stated here, a couple drinks with some weed is completely harmless, and a daily event for some people. There is zero evidence to the contrary.
The original article somehow twisted alcohols dangers and dragged cannabis in with it, which is just childish. Its like saying "If you drink yourself to oblivion with a cellphone on you, you might die!" "Because you might get distracted on the phone and kill yourself" And then someone writes an article linking cellphones to alcohol dangers, talking about the lethal dangers of cellphone use. When really its the alcohol that is the root of the problem. This is classic propaganda, and its sad to read this kind of misleading info from a PhD. Most likely the author has some kind of negative personal memory, or lack of real life experiences, that resulted in such a fallacious article.
Read the Article Carefully
Instead of rambling opinions, follow the science:
Look on medical daily for an article on "drunk and high science" -- which addresses these issues specifically.
The "normalizing" of polysubstance use doesn't make it safer. Mixing different substances very often has an amplifying effect, and that effect can have negative medical consequences.
There is a great article on sciencedirect (abs/pii/S0306460311000839) that explains this in detail.
And a second article on the peer reviewed Sage Publications (doi/abs/10.4278/ajhp.150205-QUAL-708)
It also matters whether you drink first or use THC first -- and how much you use. ZME science has a great article on mixing pot and alcohol and the effects this has on the brain.
The point is -- this is real medical science -- and the best thing to do if you choose to combine THC and alcohol is to limit how much of each you use. It is large quantities of both that often lead to the most significant medical problems.
my take
Thank you Dr. for chiming in with your take on this matter.
Me, personally, I would like to propose that combining alcohol and marijuana has an effect that is poorly described as a "multiplier effect".
It is more of an enhancement of the general buzz. It is not powerful, nor does it cause one to feel profound alcoholic effects. It is not substantially significant.
I would invite the author to entertain the notion that marijuana is substantially less intoxicating and toxic than previously considered and that there are legitimate needs of people who are psychologically dependent on cannabis who would benefit from some help.
marijuana
I drank and smoked after, and it was the worse experience of my life. I was not drunk at all, and started throwing up. My heart-rate was around 220 and I was SO sacred to have a heart attack. It was so bad. I had smoked before and stuff, but this experience changed my mind. I was scared to speak because I was scared that my heartbeat would increase even more if I would move, or speak. It was horrible
