There’s some good news for psychologists – well, at least for one sub-specialty in psychology. CNBC has just released a list of the highest paying professional occupations. It’s no surprise that doctors, dentists, and CEOs are in the top three spots, respectively, but Industrial-Organizational psychologists are # 10, not as high as some types of engineers, but higher than pharmacists, airline pilots, and financial and sales managers.
I’ve written elsewhere about the low starting salaries for psychology majors, but I also want to emphasize that you shouldn’t use something as unidimensional as pay to make career decisions. You need to seek out an occupation and career that you find personally (as well as financially) rewarding, and I-O psychology may not be for everyone [although I’ve found it a fascinating, interesting, and engaging career].
