When working on my first memoir, Regina’s Closet, about my grandmother who committed suicide when I was 10, I turned to a psychic medium to help me find out more about my grandma. Some people thought I was crazy, but I explained that it was the only way to learn about my grandmother’s life growing up in Poland in the early 1900s.

The medium “accessed” my grandmother and gave me some messages that she wanted to share with me about her life as an orphan during World War I. After that initial reading with the psychic, I did some research on my own to help me develop my own intuition. Through my study, I learned that if we simply “allow,” we can all turn on our psychic or intuitive abilities.

There are numerous ways you can tap into your intuition, and like any other skill, practice is key. It’s vital to have the discipline to practice every day. It’s also important to set aside a time on a daily basis when you can be alone, undisturbed.

If you’d like to try, begin by sitting comfortably with your eyes closed and your feet flat on the floor, and then do diaphragm or belly breathing by placing your hand on your abdomen and breathing in slowly through your nose. Notice your stomach move into your hand while your chest or thoracic section remains still. Inhale for a count of one, and exhale for a count of two. Now, sit quietly with your eyes closed. Consider making a few positive intentions, such as what you want from your day. Then, sit and be mindful, and listen to the messages your body is giving you. Where do you feel heavy or light?

To develop your intuition, think about a recent situation you’d like more insight about. Focus on that event and pay attention to the thoughts that emerge. Next, pull out your journal and write down what came to you. As you go about your day, observe others, and see if you can pick up any messages from their body language even before they speak to you. It’s all about “tuning in.” When you have the opportunity, jot down your observations in your journal.

Using a technique such as creative visualization is also an excellent way to tap into your intuition. Shatki Gawain wrote two seminal books on the subject—Creative Visualization and Developing Intuition, and they work hand in hand. Creative visualization is a technique where you close your eyes and use your imagination to create what you want in your life. It can open you up to new creative energies that will help you tap into your intuition.

You can try creative visualization by starting with a few minutes of diaphragm breathing. Next, let go of any thoughts that enter your mind, and imagine them fading away. Picture yourself in a cave where you remove all your clothes and lie down. Feel the moisture dripping from the ceiling, as its acidic nature begins to dissolve your skin, organs, and body systems. Think of yourself as a skeleton, while being completely aware. Being stripped of everything can offer a magical opening into your intuitive self and may also help you tap into your inner voice.

Creative visualization can be initiated by a therapist, but you can learn to do it yourself. Years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer, I was taught creative visualization techniques to elicit feelings of healing and empowerment. I was taught to imagine myself as a knight on a horse galloping up the beach, while the sharks were conquering all the cancer cells in my body. After doing this several times, I experienced a sense of control over my circumstances.

In his book You Are Psychic, Pete Sanders says that psychic abilities can be tapped into using the “psychic reception areas.” There are four different psychic senses, he writes: psychic feeling (in the solar plexus), psychic intuition (knowing or inner awareness), psychic hearing (on both sides of the head above the ears), and psychic vision (the third eye or the place between the eyebrows). In the same way that some of us are auditory or visual learners, we each have strengths in one of the psychic areas. Sanders says that in order to face challenges and make good decisions, it’s important to learn your psychic strength because it can affect how you live your life. Also, when you know the psychic strength of your loved ones, you can communicate with them more effectively.

My sense of intuition originates in my solar plexus. Whenever I need to make a decision, my energy is automatically directed to that area. I’m also the type of person who walks into a room and will walk out if the “feeling” or “energy” is not right. The advantage of this type of intuition is that I am sensitive to other people’s feelings, but the disadvantage is that I can more easily become emotionally hurt. My husband, on the other hand, is a psychic intuitive. His intuition originates on the crown of his head. This means that he is an innovator, anticipates problems, and doesn’t waste time worrying. The disadvantage is that he can too quickly say the first thing that comes to his mind and may be ahead of everyone else’s timing.

Whichever way you choose to tap into your intuition, it’s important to practice on a continual basis, and what a great way to begin a new year!
