In the past, I have lost and gained back weight several times. A key difference for me this time around has been losing weight in a team. I had nearly reached my high level of 175 by the end of 2010. I decided to call my older brother, Aaron, for some needed inspiration. I thought maybe he could help give me some motivation to do what my tight pants told me I needed to do—lose some weight. I got more than I bargained for. By the time I hung up the phone with Aaron, I had committed myself to trying an extremely strict diet plan for four weeks with my brother. My brother encouraged me, saying that if anyone could do this, it was me—essentially giving me a reputation to live up to during the coming weeks. We also agreed to contact my other brother, Andrew, to see if he’d be willing to join us in this challenge—thankfully, he was. Now we had a team put together. Aaron had already lost 40 pounds and so he was our coach and mentor, giving us pep talks, advice, and suggestions along the way. We set up a weekly reporting day on Friday in which each of us would report our numbers and encourage each other. We could vent our frustrations and talk to each other on the phone if we slipped up and needed some additional encouragement.
Advantages of the Team Approach
Have you ever watched The Biggest Loser? If not, I highly recommend it as something that could energize your weight loss goals and drive you to succeed. In this reality TV show, contestants are always paired up and their ultimate success is contingent, in part, on how they do as a team. I think this TV show demonstrates many reasons why losing weight in teams is definitely the way to go. There are major advantages to the team approach.
