While there are lots of good reasons to restrict or eliminate caffeine intake during pregnancy, causing sleep disturbances in the newborn is not one of them, according to a new study published in Pediatrics.

Researchers examining the effect of caffeine intake in women during pregnancy and while they were nursing during the first three months after delivery found no evidence that either affected their child’s sleep patterns at 3 months of age.

That’s good news for chronically sleep deprived new mothers who rely on coffee to get them through the days (and nights) but were worried that their java fix might be worsening their baby’s sleep.
