4 Tips for Maximizing your Strengths

How to make your strengths work for you.

One option for how to make your life feel more satisfying and enjoyable is to use your strengths more frequently and in different ways. Here are some tips.

1. Use your strengths to improve your social bonds.

For example:

- Do something romantic for your partner by taking care of a task you’re good at and they’re not.

- Teach a friend and colleague a cool "hack" (easy way to do something awesome) that you know that most people don’t know about.

2. Use your strengths to overcome your weaknesses.

For example:

- You’re good at researching information but see negotiating as one of your weaknesses. Use your researching skills to hunt down the most useful tips for becoming better at negotiating.

3. Use your strengths in different domains.

For example:

- Continuing with the researching example... Let’s say you’re great at researching but you tend to use that strength mostly in the work domain. How could you use that strength in another domain? Pick something you’re interested in, say, decorating.

- You’re good at forming mutually beneficial relationships. You usually use this strength for friendships and work relationships but don’t use this strength much when it comes to making relationships with your neighbors. You decide to work on improving your relationship with a neighbor who you see frequently.

4. Give yourself credit for strengths you overlook.

For example:

- “I’m good at academics but not very practical.”

Where you see yourself as not very good at something, are there aspects of that thing that you are quite good at? In this example, what are the ways in which you are quite practical? List 1-3 ways. Aim to use those strengths more.
