This week I’d like to share with you the incredible story of Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon who contracted bacterial meningitis, went into a coma and went through a near death experience (NDE) that lasted over a week.  In his book, “Proof of Heaven” he details his experience with a medical condition that rendered him to be virtually brain-dead for seven days.  His recovery was completely unrealistic.  Eben’s cerebral cortex- the portion of brain that controls thought and emotion—was completely shut down.  Just as doctors were considering ceasing treatment, his eyes opened, and he had come back to life.

Prior to his NDE, Dr. Alexander was a practicing neurosurgeon and a lifelong "science skeptic." He did not believe in consciousness, free will or the existence of a non-physical spirit. Trained in western medical school Dr. Alexander believed in a view held by essentially all of today's mainstream scientists -- that "consciousness" was an illusion created by the biochemical functioning of the brain.

Rather than experiencing nothingness during his seven days unconsciousness, Dr. Alexander found himself "awakening" from the dream of his life on earth, experiencing vast expansion of his consciousness in the afterlife.  Eben’s experience of the afterlife seemed so real and expansive to him that the experience of living as a human on Earth seemed like a dream in comparison.

He describes a lack of the dimension of time in the afterlife in which time did not move forward or "flow" as it does in our universe.  A second would feel infinite, and a greater consciousness could move through what we perceive to be time without effort, showing that all time exists simultaneously.

One of the biggest takeaways from this book, especially from the perspective of a healer, is that the makeup of the afterlife was pure love and there is a source of love that’s always present in our psyche or brain.  Love was such a dominant theme in the afterlife that the presence of evil was comparatively small.  This source of love is the same thing that we energy healers draw from during our healings.

Because Eben is a neurosurgeon, the book is filled with exceptional details on how the brain works in accordance to what scientists and the mainstream medical community believe to be true about the brain.  As a former nonbeliever, Even comes to term with the realities of a higher power and life after death and is able to make the conclusion that faith and science go hand in hand.  He quotes:

“I am as deep a believer in science, and the truth-respecting values that created it, as I ever was. As such, I want to affirm again — not just to my fellow scientists but to everyone — that there is a larger, more real world out there. Those who have experienced it are neither deluded nor dishonest, but they are hampered by the limits of language to convey the sheer exponential vastness of what they encountered. This world of consciousness beyond the body is the true new frontier, not just of science but of humankind itself, and it is my profound hope that what happened to me will bring the world one step closer to accepting it.”

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new perspective on health, healing and the afterlife.  Whether you’re medical professional, a healer, or a spiritualist, Dr. Eben Alexander’s “Proof of Heaven” is an insightful book you won’t soon forget.
