What can neurofeedback help with?

Neurofeedback is currently used to treat a wide range of mental health or developmental disorders, including ADHD, depression, insomnia, anxiety, or PTSD. It may also be used to help manage the effects of a concussion or other brain injury, or to improve memory and cognitive functioning in people with dementia. Some early-stage research also suggests that it may be helpful in treating the neurological symptoms of long COVID, though more extensive research is likely needed to substantiate its efficacy.

Who is qualified to practice neurofeedback?

Trained mental health professionals—including psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical social workers—may provide neurofeedback, typically in dedicated neurofeedback clinics or in private practices. Many clinicians who practice neurofeedback acquire additional training or certification before doing so; for example, The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance offers certification to providers who have completed a base level of training in neurofeedback. Prospective clients may wish to ask whether a clinician has been trained or certified in neurofeedback before seeking care.

How can you recognise a good neurofeedback practitioner?

Clients seeking neurofeedback treatment should look for a provider who has obtained training and/or certification in neurofeedback. Many clients also find it especially valuable to locate a provider who has specialized knowledge and/or training in the condition being treated—for example, ADHD or stroke recovery. Asking detailed questions about a clinician’s credentials, experience, and treatment process can help someone identify the practitioner who is best suited to their needs.
