I love being a psychologist. It’s a genuine pleasure and joy to work with people, to be invited to hear about their lives, their challenges and what they want for themselves. In working with people, I’m interested in tailoring therapy to each individual client. I recognise that every person has their unique way of being in the world and way of looking at the world, and so will have their own needs and wants in how therapy will work for them.

Therapy can be beneficial when something has challenged our usual ways of coping or because of an awareness that something in our lives doesn't feel right. Triggers might include
anxiety
, anger or low mood, illness such as cancer or a heart condition, increased stress, relationship problems, bereavement, or a life transition. You might be looking for emotional support as well as a "road map" and some "navigational skills" to help find the best path for you.

I believe it is important to work with clients - not dictate to them. My preferred treatment method is to focus on the areas that you want to work on. I believe a partnership not a prescription is important. Sticking to values means more than putting them on a website - it means actually living them. I am genuine, open and also have a sense of humour (though it is twisted/cynical/dark). I work best when clients feel comfortable, if that means we swear a lot in session - I am happy to make that sacrifice! I work clients across many areas from complex trauma, relationship issues,
anxiety
, depression and workplace issues.

My practice involves outdoors psychology sessions with children, teenagers and adults - also known as Walk and Talk Psychology. Counselling takes place whilst walking along the beach or foreshore, or in a quiet playground with young children. Clients may benefit from sessions outside of the consulting rooms if they are very nervous or anxious in an clinic-based setting; have difficulty focusing or sitting still; have previous negative experiences or difficulty building rapport with therapists; or would benefit from exposure therapy to treat
anxiety
, depression, specific
fears
or social phobias.

Feeling listened to and talking with me in an accepting space can alleviate
anxiety
.
If you are feeling depressed, and anxious, troubled in different ways, I am interested in getting to know you and the difficulties and issues that you experience at personal and/ or work and other relational levels. Through listening to you and talking together, it becomes possible to shed new light on old problems. This creates new ways of thinking. The ensuing growth development can enable you to consider yourself and others from new perspectives and allows space for different choices and the possibility to make different life decisions.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
