Due to my experience in the workforce before I pursued my passion for mental health, I have a particular interest in men’s mental health. I encountered men from a variety of backgrounds who struggled with their mental health, but hesitated to seek help.
The challenge for many in starting therapy is sharing parts of themselves, especially parts that may not have been shown before. With this in mind, my focus will always be fostering and maintaining a space where you feel valued and safe to explore your feelings and thoughts.

I welcome youth (16-25 years), adults and older adults, Veterans/First Responders/Health Professionals and LGBTIQ+ people. I also welcome First Nations Australians, and have trained working with First Nations Australians, particularly Whadjuk Noongar people in whose land I work and live. I do not currently see couples or family groups for counselling, and do not undertake court-ordered, family court or forensic assessments and reports as I feel these are best completed by clinicians who are specially trained in these areas.

I understand that people seeking assistance have issues that are unique to themselves rather than just a diagnosis. My approach is more 'what has happened that has led to this point in your life' rather than what is wrong with you. Whether the issues relate to addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression or complex family situations, I focus upon how we can work together to effect meaningful change.

As a mature person I have the benefit of my own life experience as well as my many years of professional practice that I can draw upon. The way I work is interactive, collaborative, intuitive, and respectful. I work analytically with my clients by investigating how early childhood experiences have shaped current thinking and behaviours. We explore the links between unconscious and conscious thoughts, symbolism, beliefs, emotions, desires, and how they impact daily life. The work lies within the unconscious to conscious links, how one relates to their world, allowing unspoken languages of the body to express deeply felt emotions and thought patterns. As your ‘story’ unfolds, together we work to find meanings, diverse perspectives, and solutions to your concerns.

I don't think there really is any such thing as an ideal client... my preference is someone who wants a combination of 'offloading' to a skilled listener and provision of psychological skills/strategies to help make their situation better.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
