Whether you are looking for a life less burdened by anxiety or depression, or seek solutions to life's 'second half' problems, I offer my services to support you.
The second half of life is very different from the first. The world of possibility younger versions of ourself was excited about, has consolidated into reality, and some of it is painfully difficult to live with, resulting in periods of heightened anxiety and depression. We can feel cast adrift, but conversations that validate experience and open up space for the emotional and maturational intelligence that has accumulated behind the scenes to come forth, can pave pathways forward, and bring peace of mind, even if nothing in our external environment changes.

I can teach grounding techniques to regulate your nervous system & emotional states to help with anxiety , depression, addiction or other unhelpful coping strategies.
People are most fulfilled when they have meaningful activity and connection to others both in immediate friends and the wider community. We’re happiest when we’re connected to others, connected to nature and have occupation/activity that means something to us. Every person is different and may take a different pathway towards self actualisation. I believe in meeting the client where they are and cooperatively choosing an approach to therapy. I am practical and client centred and believe good mental health starts with learning to regulate our emotions and nervous system.

I believe it is important to work with clients - not dictate to them. My preferred treatment method is to focus on the areas that you want to work on. I believe a partnership not a prescription is important. Sticking to values means more than putting them on a website - it means actually living them. I am genuine, open and also have a sense of humour (though it is twisted/cynical/dark). I work best when clients feel comfortable, if that means we swear a lot in session - I am happy to make that sacrifice! I work clients across many areas from complex trauma, relationship issues, anxiety , depression and workplace issues.

I have enabled people to connect with their meaning and purpose in life and find an acceptance of their own uniqueness, assisting people with struggles ranging from thoughts of suicide, anxiety , existential angst, complex trauma and relationship difficulties. I believe that the therapeutic space is a space where people can work through the things in life that hold them back from thriving rather than surviving. Childhood trauma and family dynamics/narratives that have defined us can be processed and redefined to offer us freedom to exist as we want to.

I offer in-person & online video sessions so that if you are unable to come to your session in person due to location, illness or anxiety , we can continue our work together.
Clients describe counselling with me as comfortable, easier than they expected & effective. By exploring your situation with you, I aim to see things from your perspective & provide someone in your corner to share your concerns with. We then develop new understanding & skills into a tool kit from which you can handle daily challenges in a less stressful way. You guide what we discuss, while I open up the conversations to discover solutions for your challenges. Using strategies & therapies which have been proven successful in research, we work towards your goals, relief from your discomfort, while feeling safe & free from judgment.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
