I feel passionate about assisting people to achieve positive life changes and gain lasting relief from lifelong pain and trauma. I believe that a therapist can work better with the suffering and distress of others not only through professional and ongoing theoretical training, but also with a true knowledge of themselves.

I'm a holistic counsellor & psychotherapist, and my work centres around helping clients make sense and meaning of their life story, and to integrate the many parts of ourselves. I work with people who may be feeling lost, stuck or out of alignment in their lives and relationships. You may be feeling overwhelmed by world issues as well as personal ones, perhaps feeling a deep sense of grief, loss or fear about the environmental crisis or around social injustice issues. I also work with people looking to do shadow work or to process and integrate psychedelic experiences.

I have experience working with people who are experiencing anxiety, panic, depression, grief and loss, substance use and addiction, domestic violence, suicidal ideation and self harm. I have worked with people who have experienced emotional, physical and sexual abuse. In my work with couples, I aim to help couples rebuild connection, communication and intimacy, and to understand the ways their past experiences may impact upon the way they relate to others in the present. I also help couples work through infidelity and conflict in their relationship.

I typically work with people who lead full and busy lives who often feel burnt out and exhausted, looking to find a way back to flourishing and wellbeing. I also work with people who are going through relationship challenges of all shapes and sizes, and people who wish to break free from old, limiting childhood patterns that keep showing up to hinder their full potential. My hope is that clients who work with me are reconnected to their deepest sense of who they are, to their strengths, gifts, and their capacity to love themselves and their lives. I work with individuals and couples.

As a mature psychologist, I bring professional expertise and life experience to supporting you with recovery from anxiety, depression, and grief arising out family and relationship issues, health (including chronic pain), work, ageing, and stress. Being familiar with the unique challenges in the second half of life, I work primarily this age group. The second half of life is foreign terrain, requiring a different perspective if we are to enjoy this phase. Having someone explain the landscape and experience eases the distress and provides a map for moving forward. The second half of life invites a deep experience of new vitality.

Many of us were raised with the notion that experiencing psychological, emotional or relationship difficulties meant that we were somehow broken; or that seeking help is a sign of weakness. I don’t subscribe to this belief. Reaching out is brave, and I am yet to talk to a person that hasn’t had their share of personal challenges. You are not broken, you are human; and therapy is not about fixing, it’s about healing.

I understand that one needs significant courage to take the first step towards therapy, and therefore I aim to provide a safe environment where you will feel comfortable to openly discuss any issues in a non-judgmental, warm, empathic, and supportive manner. We will explore your current difficulties and invite you to consider what you would like to be different. You will set the direction for our work and I will walk alongside you, as we identify and work on the strategies and actions that support you the best to build the life you want.

I find the majority of my clients are looking for someone to listen to them, they want to be heard. I am hearing more and more that "I feel invisible". They want to feel that they are important and that people care.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
