Chronic Pain Counselling in Midland, WA

I work with a wide range of emotional difficulties including depression and low mood, anxiety, life changes, stress managment, trauma, grief, relationship issues, and chronic pain.
At times we all feel anxious, stuck, lost, alone or empty. Sometimes it is fleeting, sometimes it stays for a while and sometimes it seems it is never going to leave. No two people are the same and I am committed to a collaborative approach towards understanding you and find a pathway to best resolve your emotional difficulties. I draw on a range of psychological treatment approaches including Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Densensitisation and Reprocessing, and Internal Family Systems. I recently have completed training in Deep Brain Reorienting to process lingering shock from trauma.

You tell yourself you should be over it. But your body still reacts. Your mind still shuts down.
You push it down, avoid it, tell yourself it’s in the past. But it still shows up. In your reactions. In your relationships. In the way you freeze, lash out, or disappear inside yourself.
Your body stays tense, always ‘on’, bracing for something. Some days, you’re numb. Other days, you can’t stop overthinking. Either way, it’s exhausting. It’s not just memories. It’s your body reacting, even when you don’t want it to.
You don’t have to hold it all together. You just get to be real about what’s happening - and we’ll start from there.

Stress can trigger symptoms of chronic pain and anxiety, as well as a diverse range of symptoms related to organs integral to the healthy functioning of the human threat system.
Psychophysiological education on how the mind and body work together, and why stress triggers symptoms; listening to podcasts of personal recovery stories; engaging with CBT based apps, workbooks, and mindfulness meditations to change 'threat' circuity; and emotional processing through writing are potential components of your neuroplastistic treatment plan.

I support clients who may be experiencing the complexities of ADHD or Chronic Pain.
If you are not who you want to be, you can break down who you became by accident, and rebuild yourself as who you want to be on purpose.
Living with ADHD can feel like you’re playing a different version of life. What works for others doesn’t always work for you, even when you're giving it your all. It’s not about trying harder; it’s about working differently, with support that understands how you tick.
I founded T.H.E. Psyborg to give my ADHD and neurodivergent gamers a space to Thrive, Heal, and Evolve - safely and intentionally. (P.S. You don’t need to be a gamer to feel at home here, just someone looking for support that fits.)

My roles in the public system were in health psychology; particularly chronic pain management and trauma rehabilitation.
My ideal client would prefer therapy outside in nature, instead of in a clinical consulting room! They know that time in nature is a big part of how they self-regulate, but are struggling to incorporate it. They may be burnt out, anxious, depressed, neurodiverse, or simply feeling lost. Their painful thoughts, feelings, past experiences, and patterns of behaviour are interfering with their path. They would like a supportive therapist to walk alongside them as they figure it out; someone to provide some nudges of direction and new skills, but also trust them to use their internal resources and personal values to guide their way.

How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
