When working with clients who have experienced trauma, struggle with suicide ideation, or experience ADHD symptoms, they can expect to feel heard, seen, and educated around the brain chemistry relating to their experience.
I see a diverse range of clients from 12 years and above. While some clients come for specific treatment of a pre-existing mental health disorder, many find themselves seeking treatment for depressive feelings, significant overwhelm (physical and/or emotional), difficulty sleeping, or a general lack of coping strategies for whatever life is throwing at them. While mental health awareness has seen a major push in recent times, I find most clients just want somewhere they can feel heard. Without any judgment or fear, just heard. Through this, clients often rediscover a connection and sense safeness within.

I've worked in mental health for 30 years specializing in the treatment of eating disorders for 20 years, suicide prevention and deliberate self harm for 10 years, and peri and post natal mental health.
Mental health, like physical health, is something we all have and is worth looking after. Mental health is a positive experience where we enjoy life, feel present, have energy and achieve our purpose. There are times when it can feel difficult to participate in life as we would like to. Psychological strategies are about building your capacity to navigates the struggles of life while experiencing an optimum version of yourself.

I have personal experience with various mental health conditions, post-natal depression, ADHD and substance abuse: domestic and family violence, childhood trauma, loss and suicide.
As women, daily challenges and mental load, along with experiences in an ever-evolving world, can create a sense of discord and misalignment within our minds and bodies. Ultimately, we give no space to our internal dialogue or dreams for better, more fulfilled minds and bodies. Stress, strain, trauma, and complicated emotions get pushed deep below the surface while we simply crack on with all that we need to do. Our early childhoods, adolescence, and attachments weave a thread throughout our lives, leaving us with questions we don't have the answers to. I offer safety to express your desires, dreams, emotions and more.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
