As a highly experienced mental health clinician with over 20 years' practice, I understand that people can suffer from anxiety, low motivation and mood changes when life's problems become overwhelming. At times life can be challenging, and most people feel overwhelmed and distressed when things get tough. However, it's easier to overcome challenging times with the right support, and counselling. My therapeutic approach is recovery based and future focused. Therapy is always based on a working relationship with you as you set your own personal goals for recovery.

I am an experienced Counsellor with many years dealing with a diverse range of issues. I am incredibly passionate about helping men who are struggling, as I know how hard it can be to deal with the things that impact our lives. I work well with people with relationship difficulties, anxiety, low mood, workplace stress and substance abuse. My therapy style is unflappable, there isn't anything that you can say that will throw or upset me, and I enjoy handling the difficult or complex situations.

Apart from more "mainstream" issues and clients, (the majority) I’ve also worked in a few “challenging” settings, like Domestic Violence (offenders) and co-facilitated an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) program in a Prison Farm setting.
Hi, I’m Colin Longworth, a Psychologist with weekday, evening and Saturday morning consultations, for a range of presenting issues. I'm registered for Medicare, Telehealth and NDIS. I’ve been a registered Psychologist since 2008. (I've also been a volunteer phone counsellor since 1981.) I studied Psychology in my later years. (My first two jobs were in Blue-Collar settings.) As such I bring a combination of over a half century of life experience combined with my Psychology training and ongoing professional development, to my role as Psychologist, Coach, Counsellor and or Clinical Hypnotherapist (whichever is applicable).

I’m a generally registered psychologist who’s friendly nature and client-centred approach to therapy allow clients to feel supported, heard, and understood. I provide a safe collaborative space for clients to explore their unique challenges using evidenced based practices. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship based on empathy and trust underpins meaningful and lasting change. I also understand that reaching out for support is the first step but it’s often the most difficult.

Do emotions sometimes become too painful and overwhelming? Taking that first step to contact someone for help can be very difficult. Establishing a caring therapeutic relationship attuned to individual needs is central to Susanna’s work. As research supports, the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful determinant of a positive outcome in psychotherapy. Susanna encourages her clients to explore and become aware how early experiences shape their present thoughts and behaviours. Gaining a greater understanding of their circumstances, allows for an empowered sense of their ability to create positive change.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
