Starting therapy can be really daunting for so many reasons. One reason in particular I see a lot is that individuals worry that the issues they are experiencing are not “big enough” or “therapy worthy”. I wanted to provide some specific examples of common issues I work with to hopefully ease this worry and assure you that your experiences are absolutely worthy of support: Having conflicting or negative feelings about being pregnant/post-partum, difficulty falling/staying asleep, distressing and/or recurrent memories of traumatic events, intimacy difficulties, and feeling like you constantly put others needs before your own.

As a trauma-informed Counsellor and Educator, I take a person-centred and systemic approach, supporting you to explore what's happening beneath the surface and develop practical, meaningful change at your own pace.
Therapeutic counselling working with life transitions wherever you are! On the outside, you’re capable, reliable and high-functioning. On the inside, you may be exhausted — navigating burnout, alcohol or substance use, or a life transition that’s harder than you expected. I work with professionals, leaders and FIFO workers across Perth and regional Western Australia who are carrying significant responsibility while quietly struggling. Many of my clients fit the successful stereotype. They are competent, successful people using alcohol or other coping strategies to switch off.

I practice a unique blend of clinical and organisational psychology. My therapy sessions are conversational, personal, playful, and guiding. Therapy is about a client and a psychologist starting from an idea: That things could be better. Maybe by a lot, maybe just by a little; either way, something worth working for. Something that justifies facing challenges, shaking things up, taking some risks. As a therapist I don't pretend to know all the answers. My skill is to ask the right questions.

I typically work with people who lead full and busy lives who often feel burnt out and exhausted, looking to find a way back to flourishing and wellbeing. I also work with people who are going through relationship challenges of all shapes and sizes, and people who wish to break free from old, limiting childhood patterns that keep showing up to hinder their full potential. My hope is that clients who work with me are reconnected to their deepest sense of who they are, to their strengths, gifts, and their capacity to love themselves and their lives. I work with individuals and couples.

My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and grounded in evidence-based practice.
Many people consider therapy while feeling unsure where to begin or whether their experiences are “enough” to seek support. I believe that if something is impacting your wellbeing, it deserves care. My aim is to offer a respectful, compassionate space where you can explore things at your own pace and consider what support might look like for you.

Do emotions sometimes become too painful and overwhelming? Taking that first step to contact someone for help can be very difficult. Establishing a caring therapeutic relationship attuned to individual needs is central to Susanna’s work. As research supports, the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful determinant of a positive outcome in psychotherapy. Susanna encourages her clients to explore and become aware how early experiences shape their present thoughts and behaviours. Gaining a greater understanding of their circumstances, allows for an empowered sense of their ability to create positive change.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
