I believe that meaningful and lasting change is built on a secure, and trusting therapeutic relationship. With a compassionate and curious stance, I support you in exploring the underlying, often unconscious sources of your emotional and relational challenges. Together, working to bring these patterns into awareness, opening up possibilities for new ways of experiencing yourself, others, and the world.

I have continued to expand my expertise through advanced studies in psychotherapy, attachment-based play therapy, interpersonal neurobiology, and couples and family therapy.
From an early age, I have been deeply fascinated by how people navigate life and adapt to its ever-changing circumstances. This passion led me to the field of psychology, where I have dedicated my career to understanding the profound connection between early trauma, brain development, and the nervous system.

You might be coming to therapy because something no longer fits. You may feel stuck in familiar patterns that are hard to shift, or notice the impact of past experiences such as trauma, relationships, loss, birth, or long-standing anxiety. These experiences can show up in your relationships, in your body, or in your sense of self. I’m Leanne, the therapist behind Beyond the Couch Therapy. I work with adults who want space to slow down, make sense of their experiences, and understand how the past continues to shape the present. My work is grounded in psychotherapy and shaped by 20+ years in healthcare as a Nurse and Midwife.

You might look like you’re coping on the outside—but inside, it feels different. Part of you pushes to stay in control, fix things, and keep it all together… while another part feels overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted. You may notice the same patterns repeating—overthinking, emotional reactions, or relationship tension—and no matter how hard you try, they don’t shift. There may also be older experiences or unresolved pain shaping how you feel and respond. What you’re looking for is a sense of calm, clarity, and understanding—along with support to make sense of what’s happening inside and feel more grounded and at ease.

I am passionate about helping people live mentally and emotionally healthy lives. Having worked as a Mental Health Social Worker and Psychotherapist for 30 years, I believe in the potential of every person to heal, grow and develop a sense of ownership over the decisions in their lives. People often find themselves in my counselling room after they’ve been struggling for a while and can walk in feeling overwhelmed, anxious, uncertain what to do and feeling like life has just become too hard. The wonderful thing is that we can learn how to cope, we can learn how to manage and how to be more resilient.

Most people come to me purely and simply because they heard of me and they are ready to get better, to get their relationships, and personal lives, back on track. They want a gentle, fast and effective process that will get into the guts of the problem. A breakthrough that will clear away the relationship conflict, disappointment and resentment. That will clear away the anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc and other symptoms of unresolved trauma currently blighting their lives. I am an internationally trained and experienced Emotionally Focussed Couple therapist, and trauma therapist and have been working in this area for many years.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
