Do you feel stuck in patterns you understand but can't seem to shift — caught in the same relational dynamics, or living with trauma responses that no longer serve you? You don't have to make sense of it alone. I work with adults navigating complex trauma, attachment wounds and relational difficulties. Together, we gently explore the experiences beneath your current struggles — coming to understand them not as personal failings, but as survival strategies that once made sense.

I work with adults navigating ADHD, twice-exceptional profiles (high capability, inconsistent access), and chronic pain.
If you've spent years trying harder, organising better, and following advice that works for everyone except you — you're probably not the problem. The systems were. I'm Jacob, founder of T.H.E. Psyborg and a counsellor who has been navigating ADHD since I was a kid. I didn't build this practice from a textbook - I built it from the inside out, because I know what it's like to be capable and inconsistent, to have the insight without the follow-through, to understand exactly what needs doing and still not be able to start.

I work with clients who feel stuck in repeated patterns in how they relate to others. This might include noticing the same kinds of dynamics or conflicts showing up across different relationships (not just with partners). I also work with people adjusting to life following critical illness or injury. I have a particular interest in psychological adjustment following hospitalisation, including intensive care (ICU), and its impact on patients and those close to them. I am registered with the TAC. I also see people struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, burnout, perfectionism, and adjusting to change.

Whether you're navigating burnout, the impact of physical health challenges, or just going through a difficult time, you don’t have to push through or struggle alone. I have experienced burnout first hand, and I understand how overwhelming it can be when it starts affecting your health and your ability to do daily tasks. This has made me passionate about sharing with people how psychology can help us to recover and heal on a mind and body level. You're not weak, crazy, or not trying hard enough... you've just not been shown any other way to do things.

Living with chronic pain or illness can often mean looking “fine” on the outside while carrying an ongoing physical and emotional load that others do not see.
Counselling offers a space to make sense of what this experience has been like for you; how it affects your emotions, relationships, and daily life. My aim is to help you feel more steady in the middle of something that can feel unpredictable, more able to get through difficult days, and less alone in carrying something that is often invisible to others.

I have a particular interest in supporting adolescents and adults who: • Have never been to therapy or have felt that previous therapy attempts did not work for them • Identify as womxn, LGBTIQ+ • Have experienced gender-based violence • Live with chronic pain and illness • Have migrated to Australia or Tasmania from overseas or interstate
I am an authentic and bubbly French-Australian human who made the decision to become a counsellor after my own lived experiences of mental and physical health struggles. Born in rural France, where none ever talked about mental health, I began my adult life as a high-achieving corporate professional who believed the only approach to life’s problems was to “get on with it” and just find a way to keep going. Until I realised this didn’t actually work effectively or wholeheartedly and discovered that mental health is a real, normal, valid part of being a human. I now walk the talk and value my physical, mental, emotional health.

Therapy provides a safe space to explore issues and practice new ways of being and the potential for healing from 'stuckness' or a clinical condition. The relationship with the therapist is most important in therapy, so feel free to give me a call to see if we connect. I'm registered with WorkCover (Worksafe Victoria) and specialise in helping those with trauma and workplace injury, psychological or physical, as well as ongoing medical conditions and health problems. I have training in psychodynamic and body-oriented approaches (somatics) and EMDR, as well as cognitive-behavioural (CBT) approaches like ACT.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
