Particular experience working with individuals with eating disorders, body image and self-esteem/self-worth difficulties, mood disorders (including depression, anxiety, stress management and anger), and
relationship
difficulties (romantic or other).
I completed my Masters of Clinical Psychology at the University of Melbourne March 2020, and am registered with AHPRA as a Clinical Psychologist. I love the challenge of formulating for each individual client, and adapting this formulation (and treatment plan) over time as one's presentation or circumstance changes. I am passionate about working alongside clients to help them improve their quality of life, and particularly in empowering clients in their ability to cope with psychosocial stressors. Change is hard; clients do not need to be 100% motivated 100% of the time; but they need to want to want to be motivated some of the time

I work with
couples
who want to actively engage in change to help them gain insight into themselves and the world, using their emotional reactions, thoughts and feeling. I believe people attain the greatest well-being through self- and other-acceptance. Understanding repetitive, unwanted patterns helps people step out of the fray and gain a meta-perspective making us aware of different choices that can be made moving forward. I don't work with
couples
when there are serious issues of power and control, or interpersonal violence (physical or emotional). I do not write Court reports, reports or serve as an expert witness.

I have a special interest in the treatment of trauma, in all its forms. This includes working with PTSD, Complex PTSD, sexual abuse/assault, attachment/
relationship
issues including family violence/neglect/abandonment; and mood, anxiety and somatic disorders. I believe in a safe, non-judgemental approach where we work together to identify what you are wanting to change and how to go about it, in the least distressing and most effective way possible. I am particularly interested in the use of EMDR, a broad psycho-therapeutic and empirically validated treatment approach for a variety of issues, that can facilitate profound healing.

I feel passionate about helping people make meaningful, sustainable, and healthy changes in their lives. I aim to work respectfully and collaboratively with people so that clients build their own independence and develop ways to manage life stressors more effectively, in addition to their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours. A comfortable, empathetic and supportive therapeutic
relationship
is also very important in my approach, and research shows that this is essential in best outcomes for clients. I generally work on a wide range of mental health and life issues and the approaches I work with are all evidence-based interventions.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
