Eleanor Bailey
Psychologist, PhD, PsyBA - Clin. Psych
Prahran, VIC 3181
I work with people of all ages, with a particular interest in supporting adolescents and young adults.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and down-to-earth. I aim to create a space that feels safe and genuine, where clients can be open and feel understood, while also being willing to gently challenge unhelpful patterns and support meaningful change. I believe therapy works best when it feels human rather than clinical, and I try to bring that into the room.

I am a Doctor of Clinical Psychology who trained in the UK and has worked in England, New Zealand and now Australia. My main interest is understanding the meaning behind an individual's suffering. My philosophy is that diagnoses act as a potential obstacle to truly understanding the reality of an individual's experience. Therefore, in practice, I try to refrain from medicalising someone's misery and instead be open to perceiving people's expressions of distress as often logical, rational, predictable and understandable reactions to some form of neglect, abuse, loss and/or trauma.

Every consultation uses a structured biopsychosocial framework reviewing physical, mental, lifestyle and social health, supported by validated clinical scales. Clients receive a written visual report with integrative treatment recommendations, lifestyle and psychosocial guidance, and targeted referral pathways- back to the existing care team or out to relevant clinical modalities. My role is adjunctive rather than first-line, for people 16+ years of age who are clinically-stable. I work alongside the patient’s GP, psychiatrist or psychologist to add a research-led, whole-person perspective.

I’m a clinical psychologist with a warm, empathic, and non-judgemental approach. Many of the individuals I work with come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. They may be navigating a range of mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, eating concerns, relationship struggles, or major life transitions. I really value curiosity and collaboration, and try to work alongside clients to increase self-reflection, develop new skills, and navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. I offer face-to-face and tele-health appointments based out of WellSpace Prahran on Mondays.

The two mountains represent the client and the therapist. Both face their own unique mountains to climb, with all sorts of challenges and hazards ahead. The therapist offers their guidance, not from a superior view, but from a unique angle where they may see things that the client is not able to. I love to work with a diverse range of people so as to learn together in figuring out the next steps clients might take.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
