I endeavor to provide a warm and relaxed nature to therapy, characterized by a nonjudgmental and collaborative approach. I have experience supporting adults and adolescents to navigate a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, family and relationship conflict, and trauma. I use evidence-based clinical assessment and interventions, and tailor therapy to the individual client's needs, typically using techniques from CBT and
attachment-based
therapies including schema, internal family systems, and mindfulness meditation.

Life can be hard, uncertain and confusing, and yet there is an expectation that we inherently know how to live and relate well. This is a fallacy. The realms of the personal are complex, made even more complex when two or more lives come together in relationship. Guidance, mentorship, support and education are necessary elements to navigating the vicissitudes of life and relationship. I therefore guide my clients (individuals, couples and other relationships) through a unique exploratory process of understanding, discovery and growth.

My aim is to establish a warm and trusting relationship where you can feel supported, gain new insight, solve problems, alleviate symptoms, and develop your self confidence and sense of purpose. I take an integrative approach tailored to your needs; effective therapeutic interventions are identified collaboratively, and may include talking therapy, experiential approaches, art therapy, walk & talk therapy, etc. I believe real therapeutic change takes time and can offer longer term psychotherapy options to suit your needs and budget.

Currently open for new referrals. I work from an understanding that many of life's concerns stem from our past experiences in relationships and the structural difficulties that are present in our society. This organizes the way I understand peoples experience and distress and how I seek to understand how we are in relationship, and what fixed patterns get in the way of living a more meaningful and enriching life. I work with warmth and curiosity to help develop a deeper understanding of your area of concern and better make sense of why particular patterns might be causing distress.

With a Master of Professional Psychology Practice, I confidently support clients in navigating a wide spectrum of mental health issues ranging from anxiety and mood disorders to complex trauma, relationship and attachment concerns. My interest in psychology was born out of a natural curiosity of human behaviour and has evolved into a deep passion for helping people cultivate a sense of aliveness & vitality. I am voraciously curious about the human condition, and this translates to the therapy room where I am always eager to seek understanding of the human being sitting across from me: their stories, their urges, and their "why?".

The Between - relationship counselling
Psychotherapist, PACFA
Verified
Verified
Our approach to relationship counselling assumes that what occurs in your relationship is co-created. When we shift from “your story versus mine”, we move from a focus on the individual to “the between” of your relationship. As you may have experienced, relationship patterns repeat, the same ideas and themes keep knocking on the door. With the support of your therapist you are invited to explore “the between”, to engage in a process that helps you to understand how you got here and to begin to experience your relationship differently.

Hi, my name is Josh. I specialise in working with clients with trauma (PTSD), anxiety, depression and chronic conditions by facilitating Body-Mind Processing practices. I use Buddhist Psychotherapy as my therapeutic framework. Buddhist Psychotherapy is a non-religious, brain science-focused and compassion-oriented framework, which can combine evidence-based counselling methods with body-mind integrative practices for a restored sense of wellbeing. My practice focuses on the body’s innate wisdom to work out solutions to the presented issues, as well as working with emotions as the vehicles to connect body-and-mind.

I work well with clients who experience difficulties relating to anxiety, depression, and challenges in relationships. These clients would be open to self-exploration and digging deep into the biological, social, and psychological factors that are influencing them and contributing to their symptoms, with the aim of better understanding what is going on for them. Their goals may include developing coping strategies, improving important relationships, and addressing the underlying issues behind their salient challenges. The clients would be willing to challenge their own thinking and behavioural patterns to elicit positive change.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
