I work with kind, intelligent, and reflective individuals who, despite their outward achievements, feel trapped by unhelpful patterns and past experiences. My clients often feel a sense of being lost, broken, or tainted. They may struggle with chronic self-doubt and the belief that they are not worthy of a fulfilling life. They are looking to move from a place of simply surviving to a life of meaning and purpose.

Being overwhelmed, uncertain or in pain, is your unconscious saying it's time for a change. Frequently, though, working out just how to do that, can also be overwhelming in itself, and might only be possible with an ally from outside your normal environment .....So ... What I offer is the result of many years of experiences, not necessarily welcome at the time, but they do turn out to be really worthwhile working with people in distress, or people simply seeking change, or wanting a new (outlook on) life.

I'm a qualified counsellor with a background in visual art. In sculpture, my process is one of layering and uncovering—of allowing for something unexpected to emerge through close attention and curiosity. In a similar way, therapy can bring patterns, memories, and underlying meanings into focus. As a therapist, I offer a space where people can discuss their thoughts, feelings, and personal history in an environment that is open, confidential, and free from judgement. My role is not to provide advice or ready-made solutions, but to support the process of exploration that takes place when a person begins to reflect out loud.

Often in today's world, we get caught up in so many distractions on the outside that we are not always aware of our internal experiences. We walk around anxious and depressed, with critical thoughts of ourselves and others, and often live a reality that is separate from our own personal wishes and desires. I believe that therapy provides a safe space to step away from all the external distractions and focus on identifying and responding to our emotional world in the most open and connected way, which may have been too painful to do in the past.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
