People often come to therapy knowing something is affecting them, without necessarily having a clear name for it. You may understand what happened intellectually, yet still find yourself reacting strongly in relationships, feeling constantly on edge, shutting down or doubting yourself.

My clients often are looking for ways to better handle the challenges of daily living. You may be feeling these challenges are insurmountable or that you are fundamentally unable to cope. You might not feel that you have a good understanding of who you truly are, what it is you want out of life, or what you have to offer others. You might also struggle to draw on the resources around you and make the most of your personal relationships. You may struggle to find the voice inside to reassure yourself that, as hard as things can feel, they can change. These things don't make you defective; they make you human.

I have a masters in Gestalt psychotherapy and work with a range of people and issues, including LGBTQIA+ folk, their families and others whose experiences of marginalisation have affected their mental health. A lifelong wish has been to enable others to explore their own healing journey. Emotional difficulties or life situations can feel overwhelming to deal with alone, and support is needed. I have learnt the value of analytic therapy through my own healing and see my work through a Gestalt lens. We are human, which means we are flawed and unique beings. 'We are all unique pieces of art in the making'.

The name Healing Relationship comes from the understanding that broken trust and relational trauma heal through corrective experiences in secure attachment relationships. This is first achieved through your secure relationship with your therapist, and reinfoced by healing relationships you create with those you love. Recovering from narcissistic abuse is easier when you have a compassionate and loving relationship with yourself, and safe relationship with significant others through healthy boundaries. I use evidence-based, trauma-informed individual and couples counselling methods that will help you achieve safe relationships.

I practice Lacanian Psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a talking work, or therapy, which aims to make an absolute difference to suffering. Lacan's psychoanalysis is based in the idea that the unconscious is structured like language. What you say reveals the unconscious processes that underlie any issues that are problematic for you, or recur. Psychoanalysis is the safe space where you can come to talk freely, without censorship and your analyst listens. There is no "correct" way to speak; the work of psychoanalysis is to find your own unique voice, especially of your unconscious.

I work with people who find that words alone aren’t always enough — especially when experiences are held in the body as images, impulses, or sensations rather than clear narratives. I work in a relational, body-based way, integrating creative and somatic processes to support exploration, awareness, and meaning-making. I work with both children and adults, offering a collaborative and flexible approach that supports more-than-verbal ways of communicating, understanding, and expressing experience. I am drawn to creative expression and somatic awareness as ways to reclaim the agency of our bodies and narratives.

Social Worker, AMHSW
Thornbury, VIC 3071
As a Mental Health Social Worker and Trauma Therapist, I am interested both in what happens within a person, and in the relationships, communities, cultures and systems that shape their lives. This perspective has shaped my work over the past 15 years, supporting people at the intersection of neurodiversity, race, sexuality, gender, culture and trauma. Since moving to Melbourne, I have worked particularly with trauma survivors affected by sexual assault, childhood abuse and interpersonal violence, with EMDR becoming a central part of my practice.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
