With that comes overwhelm, grief and anxiety.
I specialise in supporting those navigating the inevitable changes life throws at us, and the uncertainty and overwhelm that comes with them. Whether you're experiencing a relationship breakdown, career change, relocation, grief and loss, or a shift in identity, therapy offers space to explore who you were, who you are becoming, and all of the unknown in between. Together, we'll make sense of what you're moving through while building the insight, resilience and practical skills to navigate change with greater confidence, both in and out of the therapy room.

I can understand that for many taking those first steps to seek professional help it can be quite daunting. I am mindful of the need therefore to set people at ease from the outset. I accommodate what differing clients are looking for from a psychologist ranging from finding solutions and learning strategies to process-oriented approaches that provide the opportunity to safely explore, understand, and heal the emotional pain that often underlies psychological stress and problematic behaviour.

Bronte offers personalised counselling for adults facing various life challenges, including: coping with discrimination; stress, anxiety, depression; grief and loss; PTSD; relational/complex trauma; (dis)embodiment; chronic illness and pain; emotional injury; relationship difficulties; major life transitions; identity, self-estrangement, self-worth.
Our inner world holds deep wisdom, often hidden beneath the stories we tell ourselves. By tuning into our emotions and listening to our bodies, we can uncover a personal map to a more meaningful life. With support and encouragement, we can recognise what we long for, what we need, ‘what truly feels right for me'. Together, we can explore how past experiences and the world around you shape your present-moment experience. When you become aware of old patterns, you can decide which ones still serve you - and which ones don’t - allowing you to step into new ways of being that bring greater connection, fulfilment, health, and wellbeing.

Whilst talking about your present problems can be helpful it is often only a beginning. Over the course of several interviews you may come to recognise a pattern in what you tell me, a pattern of suffering in your life. Psychoanalysis is then a possibility. In the initial phase of the work I will assess whether this longer-term work might be appropriate for you.

Anxiety Therapists
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
