Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Psychologists and Therapists in Highett, VIC

Dr Delene Brookstein
Psychologist, PsychD, PsyBA - Clin. Psych
Highett, VIC 3190
My approach is evidence-based and draws on a range of therapies including: Schema Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
I create therapeutic spaces for people who feel stuck and are tired of repeating old patterns or carrying past memories. I help clients to explore their life experiences and understand the deeper patterns shaping their thoughts, emotional reactions and relationships, while also providing practical tools for change. There is a balance of feeling seen and nurtured but also challenged. I align well with clients who value self-reflection and authenticity. My clients are empowered to create new narratives that forge lasting change.

I draw on CBT, Schema Therapy, ACT, DBT, CFT, and somatic approaches to help you make sense of your experiences so you can begin to shift patterns that may be keeping you stuck.
When things feel heavy, confusing, and harder to manage you might notice anxiety, low mood, or patterns that keep repeating despite your best efforts. I work with adults and older adolescents navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, eating and body image concerns, OCD, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, and grief. Some people feel caught in unhelpful ways of coping, while others are managing the impact of significant life transitions. Therapy offers a space to slow things down, and make sense of your experiences, so we can work together to understand what’s happening and move forward to wellness.

I support adults, older adults and teenagers experiencing grief, loss, bereavement, trauma, migration, and major life transitions. Many come after the death of a loved one. Others grieve something less visible but just as real: a relationship, a sense of home, an identity, or a version of themselves that feels lost. Some live with anxiety, depression, complex trauma, existential questions about life meaning and mortality. I work with neurodivergent individuals in an affirming way. I also work with French-speaking clients and people navigating relocation across all states and territories in Australia.

I take an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from EMDR, ACT, DBT skills and trauma-informed therapy.
You may have been pushing through for a while now — feeling on edge, burnt out, or affected by things that haven’t fully settled. You might not be sure how to explain it, only that something doesn’t feel quite right. If you’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t quite land, or you felt unsure about going back, you’re not alone. Therapy here offers a space to slow down, make sense of what’s going on, feel heard, and begin finding a way forward that feels more workable.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
