Some people struggle to manage their emotions and behaviour. Maybe they get "angry", or upset over "silly" things and they want to understand why. Other people are looking for the right mental health support, due to current or historical problems and diagnoses. I use EMDR to treat trauma from childhood, military service, sexual assault, road accidents, medical procedures and family violence. I also help many adults who have anxiety, depression or symptoms of autism, offering a safe space where distressing thoughts can be explored safely, respectfully and with a dash of humour. I am also available to attend critical incident sites.

Currently open for new referrals. I work from an understanding that many of life's concerns stem from our past experiences in relationships and the structural difficulties that are present in our society. This organizes the way I understand peoples experience and distress and how I seek to understand how we are in relationship, and what fixed patterns get in the way of living a more meaningful and enriching life. I work with warmth and curiosity to help develop a deeper understanding of your area of concern and better make sense of why particular patterns might be causing distress.

Trauma is a deeply personal and complex experience. Often, you may find yourself feeling stuck or unable to move past your trauma. You might feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious, afraid, and/or angry. Trauma can be a deeply isolating experience, and it's not uncommon for you to feel like no one else can truly understand what you are going through. It can sometimes feel like you are carrying a heavy burden that you can't share with others. This may make you feel even more alone and disconnected. Sometimes, you might find it difficult to trust others. You may be grappling with strong emotions like shame, guilt, and self-blame.

Hello, I am Angela and I help people improve their relationship with themselves and others. The relationship with yourself is the longest you will ever have. At times it can be the most difficult with symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, attachment wounds, and life stressors. I work flexibly with your unique strengths and circumstances to help you make progress. There may be specific concerns or more general overall improvements you want to make. From the first session we will be working towards making improvements.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
