These challenges commonly include experiences of anxiety (including OCD), depression, self-esteem issues and trauma (including complex and acute trauma).
Bo takes a down to earth, non-judgmental approach with families and individuals across the lifespan in establishing collaborative therapeutic goals. Psychological interventions are guided by these goals, along with consideration of the person's developmental stage and the presenting challenges.

A wish to get better, and a willingness to look inside oneself. These are the only essentials for success in therapy. I enjoy helping people with OCD and rumination to regain a sense of agency over their mind, people with depression to understand what is happening inside themselves that is causing their suffering and free themselves from it, people with PTSD to feel safe again and gain self-compassion and heal their nervous system, people with difficulty in relationships to understand what is happening and operate more smoothly, and helping people with many other difficulties to heal and move forward.

I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) but I don't assume that that will suit everyone. That's why I am happy to use other proven modalities, including hypnosis. That's particularly effective in breaking the habit we call anxiety. My work with people who have Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) uses the approach of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy which is a skills based approach. My work is based on my belief that each person is a unique individual, rather than a diagnosis. DBT involves teaching each person the skills that will be most useful to them.

Sometimes we all need a space to voice our feelings, share our experiences and reflect on how we got to where we are. With over a decade of experience, Gayani uses an individualised and gentle approach to peel back the layers to help find strength, a deeper connection with the world and a greater sense of self.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
